Nell Holcomb PTO plans fall festival

Nell Holcomb School, Highway 177 between Cape Girardeau and Trail of Tears State Park, will hold its annual PTO chili supper and fall carnival from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Games, the ever popular jail which can hold anyone for a small donation, the School Spirit Shoppe featuring the sale of school-related items, a used book sale, sweet shop, silent auction and raffles will be held.

Modern Woodmen join in nationwide effort

On Saturday, volunteers from the Cape Girardeau Modern Woodmen Camp 5547 joined with groups nationwide to mark Make a Difference Day by donating books to the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Annually, on the last Saturday in October, service organizations donate their time and effort to volunteer projects to make a difference.

Maple United Methodist celebrating fall

Maple United Methodist Church is sponsoring a fall festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church fellowship building, 2441 Jean Ann Drive. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in a favorite costume to enjoy games, food and fun.

Cape County AARP to meet Monday

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, Broadway and Caruthers. A nominating committee report will be given. The featured program is, "The Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Center," in Cape Girardeau County, presented by A.J. Hendershott. There will be a drawing for a door prize.

Businesswomen holding membership drive

The City of Roses Chapter of American Business Women's Association, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to bring businesswomen together, will hold the fall membership campaign during November. The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. The program is "New Refractive Procedures," by Dr. Mason Bias of Kies Eye Center. Kelly parents' group to teach winter games

At 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4, Kelly School District Parents as Teachers will have a "Got to Move" group meeting at the Kelly Elementary School library. The program will teach parents some great indoor activities for cold winter days.

Veterans Day parade on calendar in Anna

A Veterans Day parade is planned for 2 p.m. Nov. 11 beginning at the city park entrance on Davie Street in Anna, Ill. The path will follow Main Street to Jefferson Street and back to the park. For more information, call (618) 833-5182.

Knights council announces drive success

The Knights of Columbus Council 1111 collected a total of $3,543.48 in donations for its 2004 Mental Retardation drive. The funds will benefit the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Hospital for Children. The center provides screening and diagnostic services for children with mental retardation and who are developmentally disabled. Some money will also support local programs for the mentally retarded.

Cape Republican women to meet Nov. 5

The Cape Girardeau County Republican Women's Club will meet at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Grecian Steakhouse. David Limbaugh is the guest speaker. Community can donate toys at Willie's Bakery

Willie's Bakery is participating in a Toy Box Drive. Bring new toys only for boys and girls between 1 and 17 years of age to 1215 Broadway (old Patrick's Cleaners building) during business hours -- 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday; 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Marine Corps League sets annual ball

The Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment of the Marine Corps League will hold an annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball beginning at 5 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Plaza Convention Center. The 229th birthday celebration includes traditional ceremonies, dinner, birthday cake and dancing. Retired Marine Col. Jack Jackson will be the guest speaker. The public is invited to attend.
