March of Dimes poker run on tap Saturday

Motorcyclists and enthusiasts may join the Southeast Missouri March of Dimes for a poker/ observation run Saturday. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The event is open to motorcycles, trucks and cars. Departure is at noon from Buffalo Wild Wings. All hands must be turned in by 3:30 p.m. Event will be held rain or shine. A registration fee does apply. Riders will be supporting the March of Dimes' efforts to raise awareness of premature birth and support research locally and nationwide. For more information call 651-6033.

VFW ladies recruiting junior members

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 6407 of Scott City is considering sponsorship of a junior girls unit. This new group's mission would be to instill in the hearts of young women a firm belief in the principles of the republic and a reverence for the flag of the United States, and to develop character, cooperation, leadership, self-reliance, and a willingness to assume responsibility and assist the Ladies Auxiliary with activities. Membership is open to girls ages 5 to 16 who are related to members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States or who are eligible for membership in the VFW. Salvation Army looking for bell ringers

In order to have a successful holiday season the Salvation Army needs volunteers. The greatest need at this time are volunteers to ring the bell. The Salvation Army is also seeking a new location for a bell ringer or counter kettle. For more information, call 335-7000.

Model railroad club wants new members

The Missouri Southeastern Model Railroad Club is searching for new members. Established in 1997, the club currently has seven members and is active and enthusiastic about working on a large model train layout in the HO scale. Club members share skills of carpentry, electrical, track laying and scenery with new members. Interested individuals are welcome to visit. Call Ron Mason at 264-4206 for more information.

Parents as Teachers get together at Franklin

A group Parents as Teachers meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at Franklin School. Safety tips, games and interactive opportunities are planned.

Dinner, auction to benefit Whitewater fire victim

A benefit for Virgil Schreckenberg of Virgil's Auto Repair in Whitewater will be held to help reestablish his business after devastation by fire. The dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday will be held at the Leopold Knights of Columbus Hall. Menu will include chili, chicken noodle soup, dessert, lemonade, tea and water. An auction will follow. Civil War Round Table discussing artifacts

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the Civil War Round Table will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship room of Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Road, Cape Girardeau. The activity will feature "Civil War Artifacts," presented by member Danny Thies and others. Those attending are encouraged to bring Civil War memorabilia for display. Voters forum scheduled for Monday at Southeast

The League of Women Voters of Southeast Missouri and the departments of political science and mass communication at Southeast Missouri State University will hold a voters forum for candidates for Cape Girardeau County government offices at 7 p.m. Monday in Dempster Hall's Glenn Auditorium on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. Candidates will answer questions and give summaries. The forum will be taped for viewing at a later date on the Public Access Channel on cable television. The public is invited. VFW scholarship open to relatives of veterans

The Veterans Tribute Scholarship is available to children and grandchildren, ages 16 to 18, of all U.S. military veterans, active duty, Reserves and National Guard. First place is $10,000; second place is $5,000; third place is $3,000. Awards will be made on a point system, with judging based on the applicant's personal academic achievement, family VFW involvement and their parent's or grandparent's military service. Documents including the entry form and scoring sheet are available at www.vfw.org. Deadline for entry is Dec. 31. Questions may be directed to the local VFW Post or sent directly to SWilson@vfw.org.

Healthsouth sponsoring Workout Against Cancer

Healthsouth in Cape Girardeau will hold a Workout Against Cancer from Oct. 25 to 29. All donations will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Participants may donate $20 to $35 at Healthsouth in Cape Girardeau (across from Doctors' Park) or Jackson (across from Pioneer Orchard) and receive two months free fitness membership. Current members may pick up a participant's form and collect donations to earn promotional items. Donation dropboxes are located at both Healthsouth facilities but it is necessary to speak to a Healthsouth employee to get signed up. Deadline for donations is Oct. 29. Donations by mail may be sent to: Healthsouth, 2387 W. Jackson Blvd., Jackson, Mo., 63755. Checks must be made payable to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Pets have howling good time at Humane Society

The Humane Society is holding a Howl-O-Ween party from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Humane Society. The event includes fun, games, prizes and costume contests for people and their pets.

Grossheider family sets reunion date

The annual Casper and Catharine Grossheider family reunion will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at Zion Lutheran Parish Hall in Gordonville. Attendees should bring two dishes and table service. Coffee and lemonade will be furnished. For more information, call Kirby Keller at (314) 469-0929.
