Jackson arts council to meet Thursday

Jackson Area Arts Council will hold an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jackson City Hall. Old business will include the scenic drive weekend, newsletter, July 4 Art in the Park and the calendar with chairs for charity. New business will include the Homecomer Art Show.

Parks department to hold day camps

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will hold weeklong day camps at the Osage Community Centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Friday and from July 28 to Aug. 1.

There will be a variety of activities throughout each one-week session including canoeing, fishing, several sports and games, arts, crafts and more. There will be guest speakers, trips to the swimming pool and a barbecue to end each session.

Cape municipal band to perform Wednesday

The free concert of the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Capaha Park Bandshell. Bring lawn chairs. Special entertainment by the Suzuki Strings Program.

The concert's theme is "March Mania." Band selections to include "March Onward," "Folk Song Suite," "Valdres," "The Golden Ear," "Home Stretch," "Invercargill," "Funeral March of a Marionette," "Russian Sailor's Dance" and a selection from "The Music Man."

Jackson Municipal Band to perform Thursday

The Jackson Municipal Band will hold its weekly concert at 8 p.m. Thursday at the bandshell in Jackson City Park on Route D. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

Special guests include Suzuki violin students from the Southeast Missouri State University Music Academy.

The Jackson Municipal Band will include marches such as "Americans We," "The Invincible Eagle" and "Circus Days." They will also perform several selections made possible by Neil Diamond. The saxophone section, led by former director Pat Schwent, will be featured on "Root Beer Rag." The overture piece by Steve Reineke is titled "River of Life." Rounding out the concert, the upbeat "Jazz-A-Ma-Tazz" and "Hey Song" will be performed.

Cape library schedules activities for children

Activities at the Cape Girardeau Public Library this week include:

Tuesday: Story time for ages 3 to 5 from 10 to 10:30 a.m.; the Tuesday for Teens program, for seventh through 12th grades, will have a teen movie rehearsal from 2 to 4 p.m.

Wednesday: Story time for ages 3 to 5, at 10 a.m.; the Lunch Bag Bunch, for grades 1 to 3, meets for a picnic, story and activity at 11:30 a.m.; On Stage @ the Library, for first through third grades, meets to learn puppeteering at 1 p.m.; Live @ the Library, for fourth through sixth grades, meets to learn the basics of acting at 2 p.m.

Parents group meets twice this week

Parents Without Partners will eat at Broussard's in Cape Girardeau from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday; food and drinks are half price for the women.

The group will attend line dance lessons at Circle S Saddle from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Call 335-0797 for more information.

Emerson's mobile office to visit Perryville

A visit from U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's mobile office will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Perryville Administration Building. Mobile office director Darren Lingle will answer the public's questions and write down constituent concerns.

Reunion set for Marine veterans of Korean War

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice ending the Korean War, July 27, 1953, all Marine Corps officers who were trained in Quantico, Va., for this war are invited to Pensacola, Fla., on Oct. 28-30.

Nussbaum reunion to be held Sunday

The annual Nussbaum reunion begins with a basket dinner at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Parish Hall, 496 State Highway F, Tilsit. Beverages and tableware will be furnished.

Each family is asked to bring an update on their genealogy to update the family tree book.

Euchre tournament to benefit Notre Dame choir

Registration for a euchre tournament begins at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2; dinner will be at 7 p.m. in the Notre Dame cafeteria. There is a registration fee and cash prizes for the top five teams. For more information, call Bonnie at 335-6772.

Proceeds will defray the cost of the concert and treble choir performance apparel.
