A public hearing regarding the proposed 2014 tax rates will be at the Cape Girardeau County Commission meeting at 9 a.m. today. The commission will vote to set the tax rates immediately after the public hearing. Last year, the commission set the property tax levy at $0.0447 per $100 assessed valuation, up from $0.038 in 2012. In Cape Girardeau County, property and sales taxes are linked. Property taxes are determined by a calculation from the state auditor's office, which considers the county's total assessed valuation and sales tax revenue. This method allows counties to use property taxes as a sort of safety net if sales tax revenue does not cover expenses. In 2013, county officials said rising expenses were to blame for the change in the property tax levy.
