JACKSON - Irvin H. Garms, a retired Cape Girardeau contractor, has been appointed to the board of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority.
He was appointed by the Cape Girardeau County Commission to replace Charles Blattner, who resigned recently. Blattner was on the board for 10 years, including three years as chairman. His four year term expires Dec. 31, 1993.
Presiding Commissioner Gene Huckstep said Garms is well qualified to serve as a port commissioner "because of his past history in construction, river construction and all types of construction."
Huckstep noted that the other Cape County port commissioners had suggested to the county commission that it consider appointing Garms to fill the vacancy.
"Irvin Garms is a quality individual who will be a great asset and valuable member of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority," said Huckstep.
He added that Garms was a member of the Cape-Bollinger County Lake Committee and was instrumental in helping prepare a feasibility study for the lake project.
There is still one other vacancy on the board that was created when John Brannock, of Sikeston, passed away recently. The Scott County Commission is expected to appoint someone to fill out his term soon.
The port authority board has nine members, with four from Cape County, four from Scott County, and a ninth member that rotates between counties every two years.
