Both outages occurred at about 6:30 a.m. and were caused by overloads from increased use of electric heat, said A.D. Cox of Union Electric Co.

About 110 customers in Hillcrest Subdivision west of Cape Girardeau lost power at 6:20 a.m. Power was back on to all but five customers by 9:30 a.m. The five households got power back around noon.

About 160 customers in Northfield Subdivision in Cape Girardeau lost power at 6:35 a.m., and power was restored to all households by 10:30 a.m.

Cox said several new homes have been built in the subdivision, taxing the existing power lines. New, larger lines are planned.
