CHUCK MILLER AND DON SHRUBSHELL

Charlene Montgomery might have gone to sleep counting sheep Friday afternoon, but she awoke counting deer -- at least the one that was in her apartment at 537 N. Sprigg.

"I just ran out of the apartment," Montgomery said. "The only thing I thought of when I saw it was getting out."

Montgomery said she had returned from track practice at the university and decided to take a nap.

About 4 p.m., she said the deer jumped through a plate-glass door and ended up in her bedroom. She said blood was scattered around her apartment.

Montgomery said after fleeing her apartment, she flagged down police. Chief Howard Boyd Jr. was one of the responding officers.

"We thought we were going to have to tranquilize it," Boyd said. "But we just pulled the curtains back and let it run out. It was last seen heading east from Sprigg Street towards the woods."

Boyd said this was the second time a deer had entered an apartment in that building.

The deer caused minor damage to the apartment, and no one was injured.
