Tim Billings, defensive coordinator for unbeaten Marshall University, interviewed for the vacant head football coach position at Southeast Missouri State University on Thursday.
Billings has been part of a dramatic turnaround at Marshall, which has seen the team undergo a metamorphosis from one of the worst teams in the country at the Division I-AA level to a berth in the Motor City Bowl as an unbeaten Division I-A school. Marshall, which played in six I-AA national championships games before moving up to I-A, is 12-0 this year and ranked 11th in the nation. Marshall led the nation in scoring defense this year and ranked in the top 10 in total defense.
"My vision is to come here and win a national championship," Billings told a gathering during his visit. "I believe the resources are here, or I wouldn't be here."
