P.E.O. DJ

Marybelle Mueller was recognized Aug. 25 for her 60 years of P.E.O. membership and service. She entertained 19 member of her Chapter DJ and six friends from sister chapters in Cape Girardeau at a gathering at Chateau Girardeau where she now resides.

She was presented a certificate of congratulations from the international organization by Chapter DJ past president, Shirley Cooper. The chapter's current president, Sandra Dobnikar, gave her the chapter's gift of a 60-year pin. Immediate past president of the Missouri state chapter, Adelaide Parsons, gave her a bouquet.

New McKendree UMW

New McKendree United Methodist Women met Tuesday with 31 persons in attendance, including five guests. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, who introduced guests.

P.E.O. Chapter DJ sponsored Jessica Hahs for a Program for Continuing Education grant. Hahs is attending Maryville University in St. Louis. Julie Combs, PCE chairperson, left, presented Hahs a check for $1,500. P.E.O. is a Philanthropic Education Organization where women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships, grants, awards and loans. (Submitted photo)

The group recited the UMW Purpose. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Pam Buck, secretary, and approved. Marilyn Fronabarger gave the treasurer's report.

Klaproth reported the UMW had served a meal to the Jackson High School marching band in August. More than 100 students were served.

Committee reports were given by:

Edith Eggers, program resources, who brought books and the Response magazine for members to read. Klaproth highlighted a book she will be donating to the library for the reading program. Klaproth also handed out certificates of recognition for the reading program members completing a plan.

Doris Dace, spiritual growth, gave the devotion titled "Who Me?"

Social Action: Klaproth announced school kits for Festival of Sharing can be collected as late as Sept. 22. Members were reminded of the World Thank offering.

Education and interpretation: Shirley Patterson highlighted the studies at mission and announced the Mini School of Missions will be held Sept. 21 in Dexter, Mo.

Membership: Inez Statler visited several nursing homes over the summer and said she would be willing to visit any of the circle's Friendship members.

Supportive community: Elwanda Corbin reported the club served two funeral meals.

Announcements:

Annual meeting will be held Sept. 27 and 28 in Joplin, Mo. There is money in the budget for anyone wanting to attend.

The fall district meeting will held Oct. 12 in Fredericktown, Mo.

UMW Assembly will be held April 25 through 27, 2014, in Louisville, Ky. Registrations are due by Nov 15.

The Esther Circle won the attendance ribbon.

First-time attendance ribbons were presented to Karron Kidd and Sandy Woodfin.

The last United Methodist Men's fish fry will be Oct. 19. Klaproth announced circle cake assignments.

The nominating committee, Julie Combs, Gerry Davis and Bonnie Blechle, will present a slate of officers for 2014 at the Oct. 8 meeting. Circles need to start planning for next year and get that information to Klaproth by the first part of November.

The Mission Team will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 24 to plan next year's budget.

The program was given by Nancy Haertling, member of Old McKendree board, on the history of Old McKendree Church.

The next meeting will be a covered dish meal at 6 p.m. Oct. 8.

Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Tuesday at the home of Renee Hesselrode.

Sue Harris was welcomed back from her leave of absence. The dates and locations for upcoming state conventions will be Oct. 11 through 13 in Jefferson City, Mo.; and Oct. 10 through 12, 2014, in St. Louis. The 2015 state convention will be held in Cape Girardeau.

Hesselrode announced that she had received the Officer Preparation Packet from international. She read the minutes from the last city county meeting.

A discussion was held on new members to be invited to meetings and social events.

Debbie Balsano presented the proposed 2013-2014 chapter budget which was approved. She also presented the social calendar for the year. The next social event will be Sept. 15 for couples to Apple Creek Winery.

Sheryl Smith presented various service projects. Members are to bring body wash products which will be given to the Amen Center.

The deadline for Sandy Ross, our 2013 Valentine queen, to enter the International Valentine Queen Contest is Nov. 1.

The Beta Sigma Phi scholarship form was distributed to those interested.

A sign-up sheet was distributed for members to sign up for meetings.

Hesselrode presented the program on cupcakes.

The next meeting will be Sept. 17 at the home of Susan Benton.
