Progressive Club
The Progressive Club met Tuesday in the fellowship hall of Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville. Barbara Lorberg, president, opened the meeting. Doloris Meyr read the minutes and gave the treasurer's report.
Vicky Crites Lane was guest speaker. She showed her many handmade quilts, explaining the various patterns and stitches.
JoAnn Adams reported that many packages had been sent to Iraq for local military personnel serving there.
Jane Boren reported that the HOPE SEED project will continue in the fall.
Shirley Beggs announced that a "mystery" trip to St. Louis will take place in October.
Lamplighter FCE
The Lamplighters FCE Club met Aug. 21 for a Mexican international meal hosted by Roberta Seabaugh. Linda Sebaugh, president, presided over the meeting after the meal.
The SEMO District Fair booth committee, JoAnn Hahs, Karen Eakers, Linda Freeman and Sebauch, have a report on the booth the club will have on display at the fair. Set up for the booth is set for Tuesday.
All members present filled out and turned in the membership forms and dues for the upcling year to Gayla Volz, tresurer.
A list of items needed for the Jackson Elks Lodge Christmas baskets was read and announced that Mary Gosche can take items at anytime.
Plans were made for a summer celebration and community picnic to be held on Sept. 20 in Daisy. Lamplighters Club will provide homemade ice cream. More information will be announced and committees will be formed at the next meeting.
A letter of gratitude was read from the Friends of the Library for past participation and donations. The letter stated a need for new members and officers for 2008.
Bottled juices for Birthright will be purchased and delivered by Bert Seyer and Teresa Hinkebein. Also, each member was asked to bring health and beauty items for Cottonwood Treatment Center. Bev Meyer will provide and fill the baskets for delivery.
Freeman gave a report on Mexican foods and folklore, dating back from Aztec authentic foods to the present day of Tex-Mex versions. She explained the food crops of Mexico and what part each played in the food market, past and present.
A brief meeting of committee members, Dorothy Hahs, Judy Myers, Jackie Kurre and Freeman was held after the regular meeting to plan the menu for the Library After Hours to be held Oct. 14. They will compile their recipes and meet again on Sept. 15 at Freeman's home.
The next meeting will be held on Sept. 18 with Sebaugh as hostess. Roll call will be with a book exchange and the election of new officers will be held at that time.
Willing Helpers FCE
The Willing Helpers FCE met Aug. 14 at China Buffet in Perryville, Mo. Gladys Lawrence was hostess and Melba Moore was song leader.
Betty Smith, president, presided over the meeting. Jo Ann Sample introduced her niece, Chele, a missionary from South Asia. She serves the seven countries as a Christian writer, editor and photographer. She shared stories of four different families in Pakistan, the effects of the 2004 txunami and the 2005 earthquake on them and their need for prayer as they learn of God's love and salvation.
Dona Maes passed the "love basket" on to Moore.
The next meeting will be at 11 a.m. on Sept. 18 at Sedgewickville Methodist Church. Each member is reminded to bring a salad, an auction item and Safehouse items.
Xi Nu Phi
The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Tuesday at Le Bistro Restaurant in Jackson with Kathy Kiefner, president, leading the meeting.
A rushing party will be held Oct. 21. Members should bring names and addresses of prospective members to the next meeting. Invitations will then be sent. Further discussion about the rushing party will be held at the next meeting.
The 2008-2009 chapter budget was presented by Cathy Pancoast, treasurer, and was approved by members.
The social calendar was distributed to members. The next social event will be a bonfire at the home of Renee Hesselrode on Oct. 18.
Sunshine gifts were distributed.
Debbie Balsano is making new yearbooks for all members and they should be ready for the next meeting.
Balsano presented the program on decorating candles. Each member decorated a candle to take home.
The next meeting will on Sept. 16 at the home of Balsano.
