Beta Sigma Phi Sorority

Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi hosted the Beginning Day 2010/2011 celebration on Aug. 26 at Dexter BBQ in Cape Girardeau. A buffet was served to about 60 sorority sisters.

After a short meeting to discuss business and plans for the new year, bingo was enjoyed and the table decorations were given as the prizes.

The theme for this year's program will be "New paths to friendship."

The first Xi Nu Phi meeting will be held Tuesday at the home of Sheryl Smith. Women of all ages to join the sorority. Anyone interested should call one of these service committee members: Debbie Balsano, 651-3778, Rene Hesselrode, 243-8947 or Sheryl Smith, 339-5822.

St. Mary CCW

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met on Aug. 19. in the Huels Room. Sister Lucille Zerr opened the meeting with a Hail Mary.

Carol Strattman, St. Mary Cathedral School principal, conducted a tour of the new school, pointing out some of the state-of-art features.

After the tour, the minutes were read and approved. Pat Eftink distributed copies of the treasurer's report.

The following commission reports were given:

Organization: The cafeteria is available for our bake sale on Nov. 20 and 21. Nancy King will chair this fundraiser.

Community chair: Zerr collected bail money for Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Legislative commission: Judy DeClue reported the VFW is donating an American flag for the meeting room

There were no bereavement dinners this past month.

Quilt tickets will be in the bulletins the second weekend in September. The drawing will be on Dec. 9 at our Christmas party.

A thank-you note was read from Father James Seyer for serving the reception for the 60th anniversay of his ordination to the priesthood.

We will begin compiling new circle lists.

A card and money will be sent to Andrew Williams, a parishioner who is studying at Conception Abbey.

Zerr requested packages of cookies for the open house at the new Food Pantry on the weekend of Sept. 11 and 12. Also, if anyone can help serve after any of the masses, let Zerr know,

A dedication of the new school will be held on Oct. 3 after the 10:30 a.m. Mass.

A wine and cheese party is planned for the Oct. 21 meeting.

We were asked to serve coffee and donuts after the 7 and 8:30 a.m. masses on the Sunday of our choice. We will discuss this at the next meeting to be held on Sept. 16.

VFW Auxiliary

Past national president Glenneta Vogelsang of Cape Girardeau, a member of Auxiliary #3838, participated in the 97th National Convention held Aug. 21 through 26 at the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind.

Vogelsang will serve as a member of the 2010-2011 National Budget and Advisory Committees.

A highlight of the convention was the announcement of the Outstanding Department Presidents in the 11 Membership Groups at the National President's Luncheon. Awards and Resolutions to the National Bylaws were announced and reviewed during Tuesday's session.

Other highlights included the opportunity for members to view the eight winning Young American Creative Patriotic Art entries and the Buddy Poppy displays in addition to attending several joint events with the VFW, such as the Joint Opening Session and the Patriotic Rally.

Thousands of dollars have been donated to cancer research facilities across the country. National President Jan Tittle sent funds to the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund for repairs to The Three Servicemen statue, the Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project and many other organizations.

The election and installation of National President Cortina Barnes, a life member of Woodbridge Auxiliary #9755 in Washington, D.C., and the other 2010-2011 National Officers concluded the convention and bring Tittle's term to an end.
