Judie Herbst was hostess when the Kage FCE met at her home for brunch for their regular monthly meeting. Tamra Walker of Columbia, Mo., was a guest at the meeting. Welker is the daughter of Shirley Palen and the niece of Herbst.

President Dortha Strack presided. Dortha's tip of the day: Keep eggs in a covered container to keep them odor free.

Members were reminded of he club's Military Mail Project. The club deadline is Oct. 21,

Palen collected funds for Alzheimer's Association. This was the August club service project.

The club scholarship applications will be available this fall. This scholarship is provided for the children and grandchildren of club members.

Dolls are to be brought to the next meeting for Child Advocacy Day.

The club is planning to participate in the "adopt a room/teacher" in Joplin, Mo.

Barbara Marshall and Linda Farrow are working on the booth for the SEMO District Fair to be held in September.

Members donated to Verna Downen's "bail" as she will be jailed for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The club reading program at Jefferson School will resume in September.

The officers for the new year are: Strack, president; Jobyna Daume, vice president; Herbst, secretary; and Opal Collins, treasurer.

The State Conference will be held Sept. 28 through 30 at the Clarion Hotel in Springfield, Mo.

The fall district meeting will be held Oct. 4 in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Collins presented the program for the day Spain.

Marian Kramer will be hostess for the next meeting on Thursday.

Lamplighters FCE

Lamplighters FCE's August meeting was held in the home of Linda Freeman. Karen McLane, president, called the meeting to order. Sharon Bogenpohl, song leader, led the group in singing the Club Collect. Freeman gave a devotional entitled "Think outside the Cat Box."

During the business session, the following was conducted: The treasurer reported that she had sent the club's donation to Joplin, Mo. SEMO District Fair booth committee members, Theresa Hinkebein, Verla Mangels, Jo Ann Hahs, and Freeman, reported on the fair booth and asked for input from members. Plans for Granddaughter's Day have been postponed. Hahs will distribute information about an October tour along the Missouri River, including the Deutsch Country Days in Marthasville, Mo. Members voted to continue reading to Oak Ridge Elementary School students every other month. Linda Seabaugh will make six additional chair covers for a classroom at Oak Ridge. Members filled out their membership forms and paid dues.

Members were reminded of the following dates and events: The 75th Diamond Jubilee MAFCE meeting will be held Sept. 28-30, at the Clarion Hotel in Springfield, Mo. "A Matter of Balance," an eight-session two-hour workshop will begin at the Extension Center on Oct. 2. Registration ends Sept. 26. Cost is S25. Oct. 4 is the date of the Fall District FCE meeting at the First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The next Autism Weighted Item workshop will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Extension Office, lower level.

Hahs began the program about houseplants by having each person place a plant in north, east, south, west direction where they thought it would best thrive. After the program, members were instructed to take the plant home and care for it properly. Freeman asked members to show what they had done on their potato jewelry and time was given for completion of the jewelry.

The next meeting will be Thursday at home of Hinkebein. Cyberbulling and sexting will be the program, plus an election of officers for the coming year will be held.

St. Mary CCW

Instead of the regular meeting on July 21, St. Mary Council of Catholic Women gathered in the Huels Room to assist St. Vincent de Paul CCW with making 15 "Ugly Quilts" for the homeless.

The regular meeting on Aug. 18 in the Huels Room. President Kate Schaefer opened the meeting with prayer.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

DeClue reported profit from the Scrapbooking Party was donated to the Food Pantry. Linda Boxdorfer read a thank-you note from Sister Lucille Zerr.

Dolores Gibbar reported four bereavement dinners have been served since June.

Nancy King announced the cafeteria is available on Nov. 19 and 20 for the bake sale. She asked for someone to co-chair the event.

Upcoming dates to remember: Sept. 20 -- Region 7 meeting at New Hamburg; Oct. 1 -- Missouri Catholic Conference in Jefferson City, Mo. The Spring Assembly will be held on April 20 and 21, 2012 in Cape Girardeau. St. Mary's CCW has been asked to host the board meeting on April 19.

Refreshments were served. Mary Ann Hennecke presented a DVD of her trip with Father William Hennecke to Lourdes and Fatima. Boni Johns also shared her pictures of the trip.

The next meeting will be held on Sept. 15 in the Huels Room,

Progressive Club

The Progressive Club met Aug. 23 at University of Missouri Extension Center to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the club. There were 14 members and 12 former members present: Shirley Bock, Ann Bodenstein, Madge Burchett, Barbara Hartle, Pat Kaiser, Alice Koeppel, Barbara Lohr, Agnes Morton, Mary Sue Oldham, Margaret Pfeiffer, Sheri Rowland, Kay Sneed, and Vera Jean Voges. The evening was spent enjoying appetizers, visiting with old friends, and looking through all the old scrapbooks going back 50 years.

A very brief business meeting was held, presided over by president JoAnn Adams. Elvia Perical gave the treasurer's report and minutes from last meeting were read by secretary, Jean Dudley.

Joan Battle reminded the group that the September meeting will be a field trip to SEMO Grain -- a food processing plant -- at the Port Authority near Scott City. Guests may be invited.

Shirley Beggs reported that the October meeting is still a mystery trip with time to be announced later. Becky Heuer reminded members that the December meeting is on Dec. 4, when we will go to Cape Bible Chapel for the Southeast Showcase, followed by dinner at Lil Miss Muffin & Stuff in Jackson.
