Major George Armistead, commanding officer, desired a flag so large that the British would have no difficulty in seeing it from a distance. During that battle, Francis Scott Key penned the words of what would become our National Anthem. The flags measured 30 feet wide by 42 feet long and 17 feet wide x 25 feet long.
