Tilsit 4-H Club

The Tilsit 4-H Club met Sept. 7 at the Gordonville Fire Station No. 2 near Tilsit with Matthew Golden, president, presiding over the meeting. There were 23 members and 16 others present. Tanner Schabbing and Todd Aufdenberg led the pledges. Songs were led by Clay Birk, Matthew Brucker, Tanner Schabbing, and Colin Schabbing. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given.

Tanner and Collin Schabbing reported on judging cattle at the DuQuoin State Fair and received 4th place out of 42 teams.

The following groups reported on project meetings: gardening, wildlife, swine, welding, woodworking, crocheting, foods B and beef.

Project report forms are due at the October meeting. Also, National 4-H Week will be Oct. 1 through 7.

Caroline Kasten gave a demonstration on "How To Tattoo A Calf."

Election of officers was held. The slate of officers for 2006-2007 will be: president, Adam Kirchdoerfer; vice president, Logan Birk; secretary, Paige McNeely; treasurer, Morgan Bangert; reporter, Tara Kirchdoerfer; historian, Ryan Aufdenberg; parliamentarian, Kelly Crites; song leaders, Jacob Aufdenberg, Landon Hinkebein, Katie Brucker and Tyler Gholson; game leaders, Cody Aufdenberg, Collin Schabbing, Tanner Schabbing and Matthew Brucker; community leader, Ellen Kirchdoerfer; and assistant community leader, Sharon Crites.

The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Gordonville Fire Station No. 2 near Tilsit.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Sept. 5 in the church fellowship hall. The program was given by the Esther Circle from the School of Missions held July 27 through 30 in Fayette, Mo. Reports were given by Marilyn Fronabarger, Tandy Wendel and Amy Cook.

The business meeting was conducted by Fronabarger, president. The United Methodist Women's Purpose was read in unison by members present for the meeting.

Thank you notes were read by the secretary, Sue Jones, from the Pete Poe family for a bereavement dinner and SEMO Network of Sexual Violence for donations in support of their organization.

The attendance mission ribbon was awarded to the Mary Martha Circle for having the most members present at the meeting.

Church Women United will hold an Awareness Luncheon Friday with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at New McKendree Celebration Center South Campus in Jackson. There will also be a Festival of Sharing quilt show from 1 to 3 p.m. at South Campus.

Members were reminded to bring donations to the October meeting for the Jackson Ministerial Alliance food pantry.

The state meeting of United Methodist Women will be Sept. 30 at Blue Springs, Mo.

The New McKendree United Methodist Women will serve a luncheon at noon Oct. 10 for an AARP conference, "Grandparents raising grandchildren," at the New McKendree South Campus Celebration Center.

The next meeting of United Methodist Women will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 in the church fellowship hall with a potluck diner and invited guests. Also, the slate of officers for 2007 will be presented at this meeting.

The meeting concluded with the annual salad luncheon prepared by individual United Methodist Women members.

American Legion Post 158

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met Aug. 8 with Dick Decker, commander, presiding.

John Hopkins introduced Dr. Charles Pewitt as the guest speaker. Pewitt created the SPEC OPS PLAZA INC to honor the military and has asked for support. A motion was made and passed to offer moral support to Pewitt's project.

Decker gave the financial report. P.M. Kurre reported membership at 607, with just 362 that have paid dues. Lou Crites had no grave report or committee report. He wanted to thank everyone that helped out in the hamburger stand at Homecomers.

Bill Poe reported that Bob Hartle donated crutches to the Legion. Poe also made a motion to have Homecomers again next year. The motion was passed to renew a three-year contract with the carnival.

Mike Strack gave the flag report, Rosie Wells gave the honor guard report, Jim Nelson had no public relations report, Virgil Whitener gave the house report, Jack Latimer gave the club report and Leonard Adams reported on dances.

Kenny Koehler reported that the baseball team finished fourth in the district. He also announced the baseball team is holding the 1st annual golf classic Friday. The golf classic will be located at Bent Creek Golf Club. The tee time will be at 1 p.m. Sponsorships and awards will be available.

Jack Latimer made a motion to honor Vincent Schwarz and Albert Beussink with an honorary life membership for the service that they gave to the post. The motion was passed.

Decker made a list to accomplish this year while he is the commander. They are as follows: to improve facilities and the property, to contact members and establish a program to get members involved, to implement an associate membership in the Legion and to develop a more family friendly post.

Town & Country FCE

The Town & Country FCE Club met Thursday at the home of Margie McAnally. Carolyn Thompson led the group in a word search game.

Mary Klaproth, vice president, presided over the business meeting. It was reported that Darlene McCain and Klaproth attended a meeting on Aug. 22 in Perryville, Mo., to plan leader training for the upcoming year. The FCE Leader Training sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Cape County Extention Center in Jackson. Registration should be submitted by Nov. 3.

A $25 memorial was given to the Missouri Foundation for Family and Community Education in memory of Norma Scrieber.

Club members are to bring bags of candy to the October meeting to fill trick or treat goody bags for Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center. Sue Jones will contact Parkview State School to set up a Halloween Party the last week of October. Dates for both parties will be announced later.

The MAFCE 2006 Annual Conference, celebrating its 70th year, will be held Oct. 18 through 20 at the Holiday Inn Select in Columbia, Mo. Those attending are Lois Seabaugh, Linda Thompson, Carolyn Thompson, Klaproth, McCain and Jones

National FCE Week will be observed Oct. 8 through 14. The club will plant a pin oak tree on the Jackson Extension Center grounds at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 7. After this, the club will put the SEMO District Fair booth display in the window of Ross Furniture Store in Jackson. Members will attend St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 8. After the service, members and families will go to Jay's Smokehouse for lunch.

Members are to bring 10 Christmas cards ready for mailing to "Friends of our Troops" at the October meeting. Fall District meeting will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 24 at Brazeau, Mo., with the club to provide a table centerpiece. Members were reminded to keep current with volunteer hours for the year and to bring food pantry items to the October meeting for one of the group's projects.

The program was presented by Klaproth and McCain. They gave a book review on "On an Outrageous Older Woman" by Ruth Harriet Jacobs.

The next meeting will be Oct. 12 with Inez Knott serving as hostess. All members are to dress in Halloween dress.

Club Out will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Stooges in Jackson.
