Grace UMW

Grace United Methodist Women met Sept. 6 at South County Park. A program on the history of Old McKendree Chapel was given by Nancy Haertling, a member of the board of Old McKendree. The group returned to the church for a sack lunch and business meeting.

Margaret Zieba reported on the Mini School of Missions held Aug. 27 in Sikeston, Mo. It was learned that $100 would buy a water filter that would last eight to 10 years to provide safe water for a family's water needs in Haiti. This will be discussed again at a later date.

Business included a discussion of a vacuum cleaner purchase, what our pledge for 2012 should be, and how much money we would donate to the Old McKendree fund.

Margaret Dement asked for time off from organizing bereavement dinners and that responsibility was accepted by others in the group.

Helen Ueleke asked for donations of coffee cake, breads, and muffins for the Church Women United meeting held Sept. 16 which was held at Grace United Methodist Church.

The city-wide meeting will be held Oct. 4 at Hobbs Chapel, and the district meeting will be Oct. 22 at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. Members were urged to attend.

Barb Miller reported on another book from the reading list, "The Noticer," and Margaret Dement will donate the book to the church library.

The meeting was closed with prayer from the "Response" magazine.

American Legion Auxiliary 63

The American Legion Auxiliary 63 met with 24 members and six guests, female residents and two staff members, from the Missouri Veterans Home in attendance. Hostesses were Jane Grojean, Madeline Hente and Deanna Peterman. Tina Bill was the recipient of the 50/50 drawing.

Following lunch Barb Yallaly, president, displayed 20 items from yesteryear, and members listed the number of items the ladies had in their possession. Items ranged from a sock darner to an apple peeler.

An announcement about the Boys and Girls Club second Annual Spaghetti Supper is scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the American Legion Hall. Cakes or cupcakes will be provided for dessert by Auxiliary Unit 63.

As of Sept, 14, the auxiliary membership is at 52 percent of goal. Linda Kern reminded everyone dues are due, and to recruit new members.

Linda Kern, education chairman, asked members bring items for Jefferson Elementary School. Suggested items were socks, wet baby wipes, hand sanitizer, and socks. Jefferson has students kindergarten through fourth grade. These items are to be brought to the Oct. 12 meeting. Also continue to bring non perishable food for the Red Star food pantry.

St. Mary CCW

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met on Sept. 15 in the Huels Room. President Kate Schaefer opened the meeting with prayer.

Dolores Gibbar, bereavement chair, said two bereavement dinners were served.

There were no commission reports.

The Voice for Life Convention, a pro-life support organization, will be held Oct. 22 in Leopold, Mo. It was moved by Diane Schaefer that we place an ad in the convention program. Motion carried.

In response to "America Needs Fatima", Marge Conway will host recitation of the rosary at noon on Oct. 15. Location is to be determined.

Birthright expressed gratitude for donation for computer.

Coffee and donuts will be served on CCW Sunday, Oct. 30. Weather permitting, it will be held outdoors.

St. Vincent de Paul will have their big Ugly Quilt project on Oct. 28 and 29. All are invited to help for a few hours or all day.

The CCW holiday bake and craft sale will be held in the school cafeteria after all masses on Dec. 3 and 4. This is the major fundraiser for the year.

The Christmas party will be held Dec. 15. Brenda Kuhn will sing and play keyboards.

Dr. Kondra Andrews will present the program on chiropractic health at the January meeting.

Since October is the month of the rosary, we will pray the rosary at the Oct. 20 meeting. Becky McClean will demonstrate her rosary project for the missions.

Refreshments were provided by the September circle.
