New Salem UMW

The United Methodist Women of New Salem Church in Daisy met in the church fellowship hall Sept. 16 for their annual picnic and monthly meeting. A picnic was enjoyed by members and spouses.

The business meeting was opened by Dorothy Hahs, president. There were 13 sick/ shut-in calls made during August.

A full-day meeting will be held Sept. 23 at the First General Baptist Church in Jackson.

Verla Mangels reported on the T-shirts that will be ordered. She had a sample of the color that had been selected. Negotiations about the price and printing the church emblem on the T-shirts are still ongoing.

The Festival of Sharing was again discussed. New Salem Church will be donating the paper products kit this year.

The UMWs will again host the Vigortone Dinner on Oct. 9. A fall display for the church was tentatively discussed.

Colleen Lukefahr presented the program "The Wilted Rose."

The next meeting will be on Oct. 4 at the home of Margie Roberts.

FCE Council

The FCE Council met Sept. 7 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson with Linda Sebaugh presiding. Five clubs were represented with 18 members, a member at large and a guest in attendance.

The Fall District Meeting will be Oct. 24 at the Brazeau, Mo., Community Hall. Club books will be available. Each club is asked to bring dolls for Child Advocacy Day and to bring Pennies for Friendship and Nickels for Youth. A tour of Brazeau is planned and includes viewing the oldest church in Perry County, a visit to the Hemmann Winery and a stop at Carrie's Tea House along with other stops of interest.

Linda Thompson was honored as a first-time attendee at the National Meeting of FCE.

There were 44 people who attended the FCE-sponsored trip to The Muny in St. Louis.

Leader training will be held Nov. 13 at the Extension office. The six programs are as follows: aging successfully; family choice media; mental fitness; judicial system; quick, healthy meals; and different styles of grandparenting. Member registration is due Nov. 3.

The Cape Girardeau County report on public policy by Mary Klaproth won first place at the state meeting. The report on international studies also won first place. Thompson will receive a certificate for honorable mention as Heart of Missouri FCE. These awards will be presented in Columbia, Mo., at the annual conference Oct. 17 through 20. Dorothy Lichtenegger received an award for Family Life and will be attending the conference on a scholarship.

A conference, "Grandparents and Other Kin Raising Grandchildren," will be held Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the New McKendree United Methodist Church Celebration Center in Jackson.

Nominations of officers were made. They are Agnes Wachter, president-elect; Nelda Crader, recording secretary; and Klaproth, treasurer. Nominees were accepted by acclamation.

A four-class session, "Eat Well, Be Well with Diabetes," will be held at the Extension Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, 9, 16 and 30.

Hahs received a $500 HEED grant and Lamplighters FCE added $600 to this for the "Look, Listen, I Can Read" program. There were 170 books presented to the Regional Riverside Library in Jackson.

Dortha Strack of the Kage Club received a HEED grant titled "Reading is grand." Books were given to Jefferson Elementary School in Cape Girardeau for grades kindergarten through second grade.

Klaproth reported that 23 people gave blood at the recent blood drive.

A trip to Branson, Mo., is planned for Nov. 14 through 16.

Cape Girardeau County AARP

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 met on Sept. 11.

A brief business meeting was held followed by a fellowship luncheon, with members bringing salads or desserts. Fried chicken was provided by the chapter.

Brucie Woods provided music.

Ladies Auxiliary VFW 3838

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 3838 met Sept. 14 at the post with Sheila Allen, president, presiding over the meeting.

Jennifer French, Juavata Clover, Joyce Clifton and Norma Huhn were submitted and approved for membership.

Glenneta Vogelsang read the minutes from last month's meeting. The minutes were approved. Bills were submitted and approved for payment.

A pilgrimage to the National Children's Home will be held Oct. 26 through 29. Members should continue to save Campbell Soup labels. These are used to purchase a van for the VFW National Children's Home.

Tom Berkbigler from the VFW spoke regarding the Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy contests. He has visited 12 local schools and distributed materials for these contests. He reported that medals and certificates would be given to all partcipants for the Voice of Democracy.

The VFW will host its annual picture at noon on Sunday at the VFW lakes. Members and their families are invited. Auxiliary members are asked to bring desserts and a covered dish.

Committee reports were given. Members are reminded that bingo volunteers are needed every fourth Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Sharon Polito, community service chair, reminded us to have a home plan for our families in case of fire, natural disaster or terrorist attack.

Thanks were expressed to Polito for spending many hours sewing banners for deceased veterans. Volunteers are needed to continue sewing the banners.

Standing rules were read by Judy Thrower and they were accepted by the membership. We are continuing to collect supplies for our deployed veterans. Lists of needed supplies and tubs to collect them in are located in the canteen.

Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club

The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met for their September meeting at Jay's Smokehouse in Jackson with 10 members and two visitors present.

Luella Armstrong, president, presided over the meeting.

Mary Mouser, program chairman, and Lillian Birkman, hostess, led the group in playing "telephone oracle."

The next meeting will be held Oct. 16 at Jay's. Armstrong will be hostess with Evelyn Ritchie as program chairman.

American Legion Auxiliary 63

The American Legion Auxiliary United 63 met Sept. 13 at the American Legion hall. A field trip was taken to Old McKendree United Methodist Church. About the year 1809, people started gathering at this site because of the huge grove of trees with a sweet spring nearby. Folks came by horseback, wagons, etc., and had to have water for themselves and the horses. McKendree Church was organized in July 1809 and regular camp meetings were held there until the church was built.

The second stop was in Jackson at the memorial to veterans of all wars at Brookside Park. There are a total of 2,400 veterans listed on the wall, which was dedicated in 1993.

The final destination was at St. Mary's of the Barrens Church in Perryville, Mo. Brother Rich Zoellner was a personal guide for the group.

Lunch was held at Ponderosa restaurant in Perryville. A brief business meeting was held and the group headed home.

The next meeting will be at noon on Oct. 11.
