Cape Girardeau County FCE Council

The Cape Girardeau County Quarterly FCE Council met Sept. 1 with Inez Statler, president, presiding. There were 11 members present. The minutes were read by Mary Klaproth and Jeannie Rehak gave the treasurer's report. It was stated the policy of the FCE organization is to have at least two signatures on all financial accounts of the county and individual FCE clubs.

Klaproth gave a report for the tour committee. Three trips have been sponsored by FCE in 2011 with a total of 106 persons going on the trips.

The following slate of officers were elected to assume their duties on Jan. 1, 2012. Judie Herbst, vice president; Sue Jones, corresponding secretary; Jo Ann Hahs, president elect. Hahs will appoint the Public Relations Officer.

Hahs had applications available for the $300 Cape Girardeau County FCE scholarship. The requirements to apply include being a Cape Girardeau County high school or home schooled graduate and a Cape Girardeau County resident, have a minimum of 30 college or post high school credits, must be enrolled in a college/post high school educational program and must have a total GPA of at least 2.75. Applications are available from FCE members and the University of Missouri Extension Office. Money will be given for the spring semester 2012.

Mary Gosche reported on the sessions offered for the fall Leader Training to be held Oct. 28 at Salem Lutheran School in Farrar, Mo. Registraton begins at 1:15 p.m. and the sessions will begin at 1:30 p.m. The sessions include heirloom seeds, breadmaking, ovarian cancer and disaster preparedness. The spring leader training sessions will be held on March 19 beginning with registration at 9:15 a.m. and the sessions beginning at 9:30 a.m. The sessions include women and heart disease, household hints, made in the U.S.A. and paper, plastic or neither.

Members discussed the 75th Diamond Jubilee MAFCE 2011 Annual Conference to be held Sept. 29 and 30 in Springfield, Mo. At the present time five members are planning to attend from Cape Girardeau County. Judie Herbst volunteered to purchase items for the country store for which all counties attending are to bring. Hahs will be in charge of making the tri-fold. Cape Girardeau County will receive first place awards at the conference for the reports they have submitted on community successful project, health, international, membership and marketing, public policy, scholarship, youth and education and second place in home and community environment.

Information was available for the Fall District meeting to be held Oct. 4 at the First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The cost will be $10 and reservations are to be mailed to Hahs, Southeast District director, by Sept. 23. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting beginning at 10 a.m. Cheerful Country Doers and Kage FCE Clubs will each donate a table centerpiece and it is suggested all members attending from Cape Girardeau County bring an item for the silent auction.

Darlene McCain gave a report on attending the National Association for Family and Community Education Annual Conference in Denver, Colo. She received an Alumni Board Scholarship to attend the conference.

Hahs reported on the "Love by the Pound" project of the Cape Girardeau County FCE Clubs. At the present time 114 weighted blankets, 82 weighted lap pads and 43 shoulder snakes have been made and donated to TouchPoint Autism Center in Cape Girardeau. The next work day will be Oct. 12 and this will be followed by another work day Feb. 1, 2012, at the University of Missouri Extension Center.

Gosche will be leading a program entitled, "A matter of balance," beginning in October.

The next quarterly FCE council meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 1 with the Town and Country FCE club in charge of arrangements and the Oak Ridge FCE Club to give the devotion.

SE B&G Chapter of MAA

The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association met Sept. 6 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. There were five board members in attendance, Tom Frasher, Roger Guyot, Melody Hagans, Jill Kohut, and Larry Simon.

The account values are unchanged from last month.

Frasher reported that he would be attending the MAA Leader's Weekend in Columbia on Sept. 15 and 16. He reported that the chapter's latest scholarship winner, Kurt Heischmidt, has been invited to attend the Friday night banquet.

Frasher reported that he is looking for someone to host a watch party, including lining up a place for the party, for the Sept. 24 football game against Oklahoma.

The chapter will inquire with the MAA about participating in the MU Homecoming blood drive in October. The dates acceptable for participation will be inquired about.

Frasher reported that he will pick up some Mizzou items during leader's weekend for the Founder's Day silent auction. Kohut reported that some Dollar General Stores have a great selection of Mizzou Items that we could possibly use for attendance prizes or auction items. Hagans suggested that the chapter consider home baked items such as cakes for silent auction items.

Board members discussed the MAA Homecoming Day of Service scheduled for Oct. 1 and it was decided that the chapter would not participate.

Simon reported that the chapter's nominee for the Tiger Pride Award was not selected by the awards committee. This was the third consecutive year that person was nominated for the award. Simon suggested that board members select a different nominee next year for one of the Alumni awards.

Frasher suggested that the chapter find a "child appropriate movie" for showing at next year's Diversity Project movie night.

Simon reported that he will contact the Salvation Army to reserve our two weeks for ringing the bell. The tentative two weeks are the weeks of Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Kmart in Cape Girardeau. Hagans said she will ring on the first Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.

Town & Country FCE Club

An international meal was a highlight of the Town and Country FCE Club meeting on Sept. 8 at the home of Sue Jones, with Mary Klaproth and Lois Seabaugh serving as co-hostesses.

The meal consisted of dishes from Spain prepared by members of the club. Sue Jones made recipe books, along with a map and history of Spain, which were distributed to attendees. In addition, a video on the country of Spain was shown. Marjorie Swan was a guest.

Pennies for "Coins for Friendship" were collected. Thank-you notes were read from the Lutheran Home for the bingo prizes previously given and Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center for sponsoring an ice cream social Aug. 17.

Members continue to bring clothing articles for the Elks Club Christmas baskets.

Klaproth reported on the quarterly FCE Council meting held Sept. 1 at the Jackson Extension Center. Announcements for upcoming events were MAFCE 75th Diamond Jubilee Conference, Sept. 28 through 30 at Springfield, Mo., and weighted blanket work day Oct. 12 at the Jackson Extension Center. In observance of National FCE Week Oct. 9 through 15, the club will plant a tree at the Jackson Extension Center and assemble the fair booth in a local business in Jackson on Oct. 8 and attend First Baptist Church in Jackson as a group on Oct. 9 followed by lunch at a local restaurant.

The FCE Southeast District fall meeting will be held Oct. 4, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., hosted by Butler County. Registration is due by Friday.

Military mail will be brought to the Oct. 13 meeting, along with candies to fill Halloween treat bags for Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center.

The club will have a booth at the garage sale Nov. 5 at the Osage Centre.

Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Branding Iron in Jackson. Joyce King received the hostess gift.
