Council of Garden Clubs

At a recent meeting of the Cape Girardeau Council of Garden Clubs, Barbara Blanchard reported that the state convention awarded the pink rosette state ribbon for the council's spring flower show. This is the highest award given.

The council's yearbook won a blue ribbon and Four Seasons Garden Club won the membership award.

It was noted the fall flower show is Oct. 12.

Alpha Mu Master

Members of Alpha Mu Master of Beta Sigma Phi met Sept. 9 at the home of Charlotte Bess.

Carole Calvin presided and new yearbooks were distributed.

Marsha Parrish announced the annual garage sale will be held Nov. 2 at the Osage Community Centre. It was also announced the preferential tea will be Oct. 21 at Centenary United Methodist Church's Family Life Center.

Judie Herbst presented Calvin with the sorority scrapbook.

Bess gave the program on "Friendship." Each member told what she thought the qualities of a friend should be and also told where and how someone might meet new friends.

Secret sister gifts were received and acknowledged.

Town, Country Club

Lois Seabaugh was hostess for and gave the devotional at the Sept. 12 meeting of Town and Country FCE Club. Roll call was each telling a favorite thing about the fall season.

The business session was conducted by Sue Jones. It was announced the club received a blue ribbon for its booth at SEMO District Fair; a certificate was received at the state meeting in Columbia for being named an All Star Club, and Jones received a certificate for second place for the Cape County Global Report.

Darlene McCain will attend the leader training planning meeting Sept. 23. She gave a report on the planning meeting for the fall district meeting to be held Oct. 24 at the extension office in Jackson.

Activities were discussed for NAFCE Week Oct. 13-19. Included will be displaying the fair booth in the window at Ross Furniture in Jackson, planting a tree at the extension office, and attending worship service at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel in Cape Girardeau and then going to lunch.

Items were brought for Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.

Programs were presented by McCain on "What's New In Gardening," and by Seabaugh on "Families Now and Then."

The Oct. 10 meeting will be at the home of Bobbi Price.

American Legion Auxiliary

Barbara Yallaly was hostess for a potluck meal at the Sept. 11 meeting of American Legion Auxiliary. Prayer was voiced by Lois Woodford.

The business session was conducted by Iola Amelunke. Chairpersons were selected for various committees.

Plans for the new year include sponsoring a Girl Scout troop, taking refreshments monthly to Just Say No Club at Jefferson School, and a Make a Difference project was selected. It was decided to purchase long distance phone cards and take to Otahki Girl Scout CGirl Scout goal is to collect 90,000 minutes to commemorate the 90th year of the Girl Scout organization. The cards will be delivered to men and women in the military. The project is in connection with American Red Cross.

The Oct. 9 meeting will be at Grace United Methodist Church.

VFW Auxiliary 3838

Debbie Griffin presided at the Sept. 12 meeting of VFW Auxiliary 3838.

A donation of $25 for books was made to the Veterans Hospital in Poplar Bluff.

It was reported the auxiliary and post handed out more than 540 flags at SEMO District Fair parade, and conducted morning and evening ceremonies in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001.

Plans were discussed for the family picnic, with auxiliary members to bring pies and cakes. Proceeds will go to the auxiliary's cancer fund.

It was noted that the deadline for the Voice of Democracy contest is Nov. 1.

The Oct. 10 meeting will be held at the post.

FCE state conference

Twelve members representing the FCE clubs of Cape Girardeau County attended the 66th Annual Conference of the Missouri Association for Family and Community Education, held Sept. 4 to 6 in Columbia. A total of 164 attended from across the state.

The theme was "Learn From Yesterday, Live Today, Dream of Tomorrow."

The conference included various workshops, entertainment and a banquet. State scholarships were given to six grass roots members who had never attended a conference.
