Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its monthly meeting Aug. 2 at the University Center on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. Maria Childress, president, presided over the meeting.

The program for the meeting was presented by Theresa Taylor, executive director of Vision House. She provided her personal testimony regarding addiction and the impact that it had on her desire to spearhead a faith-based transitional housing project in Cape Girardeau. The Vision House program is one of the 2006-2007 supported service projects of the Zonta Club.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at the University Center.

Cape Girardeau CWU

The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met Friday at Gordonville United Methodist Church with 15 in attendance. Joyce King, a member of Gordonville UMC, gave a history of the church from its beginning in the 1840s. She shared many pictures, books and other information of the church. The group then took a tour of the church and the new addition.

The business meeting was opened by Michele Moon, president. The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report was given. Correspondence included a thank-you note from Erin Gerlach and other Young Life members who attended Timber Wolf Camp on donations given to them from the CWU.

The recent CROP Sale was discussed. Monies from the sale will go to the scholarship fund, Young Life and the Heifer Project through Church World Service. Moon thanked all who worked and contributed.

Upcoming events include the Awareness Luncheon, which will be held Sept. 22 at New McKendree Worship Center on Highway 25 in Jackson. Members are asked to bring a salad to share with the group for lunch, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will be open to the public. Dr. Frank Nickell will present the program on historical churches in the area. Joe Trower, who is associated with Festival of Sharing, will talk about the quilts that will be displayed that day. The quilts will be auctioned off at Festival of Sharing on Oct. 21 at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Mo. The quilts will be on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Books are being collected for the Festival of Sharing for the 20 correctional facilities in Missouri and may be left inside the north side door at Grace United Methodist Church. New or used books, paperback or hardback in good condition will be accepted. Nonfiction, reference, resource, hobby and crafts books are needed. Children's books will be placed in correctional center visitation rooms.
