The Oak Ridge FCE Homemakers Club met on July 19 at the home of Melva Floyd in Oak Ridge. The meeting was called to order by Jean Rehak, president. The devotion, "I Thank the Lord" by Helen Gleason, was from the book "Give Thanks for Little Things," and was read by Marilyn Retherford. Roll call was answered by 11 members, who responded with activities enjoyed by their families on the Fourth of July. Peggy Barks, secretary, read the minutes of the June meeting, which were approved as read. The club also approved the treasurer's report. It was announced that the club gave $40 to Teen Challenge International of Mid-America in memory of John Popp, husband of member Barbara Popp.
Discussion about the country of Afghanistan, including the international meal, centered on the lives of the people who live there year-round. Carole Jo Byrd shared a letter from her brother, who lives in New Delhi and goes to Afghanistan often, and who spoke of the bombings endured by residents of their cities. He related that he always had two security men with him at all times. A longer program will be given by Jackie Brandtner at next month's meeting.
In discussing plans for the celebration of 100 years of membership in FCE by the Oak Ridge Homemakers, it was related that a committee composed of Debbie Baughn, Byrd, Barks and Retherford had examined many past programs, pictures and memorabilia of the club and chose several ribbons won by the group as well as minutes and scrapbooks made in the past. Invitations are to be sent to many city and county dignitaries. It also was mentioned that it would be a good idea to write an article to other newspapers in this area, detailing how meetings were conducted (and show some of them) and activities pursued by the group in years past.
Mary Gosche sent a letter requesting attendance of the vice president of the club at a meeting to plan programs for next year. Brandtner will attend.
The program was given by Baughn and involved showing respect for the American flag. There were five winners in a game testing knowledge of the flag. Winners were Retherford, Rehak, Byrd, Hecht and Criddle. Another game was won by Barks. School supplies to donate to the Jackson schools were collected. Refreshments were served by Floyd.
The next meeting will be Aug. 16 at the Jackson Elks Lodge.
