Sharon Aldredge was hostess when the Kage FCE Club met at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center for its regular monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by president Dortha Strack. Dortha's tips for the day: Lemons heated before squeezing will give almost twice as much juice. Line vegetable drawer with paper towels. Veggies and lettuce will keep longer.
Applications for the Cape County Scholarship are due Sept. 15. Members are encouraged to give the application to relatives and friends eligible for the scholarship. Students must have at least 30 hours in college before application.
It was reported that a memorial had been sent to the FCE Foundation in memory of past member Edna Hey.
Plans are being made by Strack and Aldredge to attend the state conference Oct. 3 through 5 in Hannibal, Mo. Registration is due by Sept. 15.
Members were reminded not to forget their "pal" at the Fountainbleau Lodge. Several members are participating in the crystal club at the Lutheran Home and the reading program at Jefferson Elementary School.
The next workshop for the autism project is on Halloween at the University of Missouri Extension office in Jackson. Volunteers for the autism project are invited to come in costume.
The club has decided to do a cookbook for members. Each member is to contribute 10 assorted recipes for the success of this project. A decision will be made at a later date whether or not to reprint and distribute further. Shirley Palen will type the recipes for publication.
The dues for the national, state, county and club are now due and payable at any time.
"Friends of Our Troops" certificates, which was the military mail project for 2011, were distributed. The club will participate in this project again this year. The deadline for submitting cards will be at the end of October. No glitter cards will be accepted, and members were encouraged not to use envelopes.
Because of the absence of a quorum at this meeting, the election of officers was tabled until the next meeting.
The program was an in-depth discussion of "Made in America" products by members.
The next meeting will be Sept. 6. The hostess will be Kara Clark Summers. The telephone committee will notify members about the time and place of this meeting.
