American Legion 63

The business meeting of the Louis K. Juden American Legion Post 63 was held on Aug. 6 with Dennis Woeltje, commander, presiding.

Keith Seabaugh, past Zone IV commander and Altenthal-Joerns Post 158 member, was in attendance. He presented the post with a historical document belonging to former Post 63 charter member, Raymond Beckman.

Doc Yallaly reported that Dunklin County, the American Legion Baseball District winner, defeated Perryville, Mo., but lost to Festus, Mo., in zone play.

A note of appreciation was received from the Bud Milligan family. Nancy Nussbaum Robinson sent a note of appreciation for flagpole repair. A donation was received from Osborne's.

John Powers shared upcoming Missouri Veteran's Home activities: an outing to Metropolis, Ill., and an October fishing trip to Bloomfield, Mo.

Appreciation was expressed to participants at the first Naturalization Ceremony held at the Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr., United States Courthouse held in July. The color bearers were Frank Cruse, Eddie Farrow, Burt Lehman, Monte Kyle and Roy Rhodes. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Sr., administered the Oath of Allegiance to 25 new citizens.

Rhodes reported that the Joint Veteran's Council assessment was due.

Kyle reported on the success of the chicken dinner held in July. Due to the annual ham and bean dinner in November, a chicken dinner will not be planned for next quarter. Ham and bean dinner tickets have been prepared and are available from Woeltje.

Wayne Wallingford reported on the status of the Homeland Security Fence.

John Powers shared highlights of the American Legion Department of Missouri 90th Annual Convention which was held in July in Jefferson City, Mo. Powers described the legislation shared by various candidates and speakers, the reports of various committees and ongoing plans for the Fisher House at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis.

The following officers were installed by Seabaugh: Sheryl Smith, commander; Wallingford, first vice commander; Lehman, second vice commander; Melvin Amelunke; adjutant; Powers, sergeant-at-arms; Kyle, finance officer; Eddie Farrow, chaplain; and Max Stovall, judge advocate.

Woeltje, the outgoing commander, was presented with a past commander tie and Legion Riders jacket in appreciation of his leadership and service to Post 63. He continues to serve as District 14 commander.

The next business meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 3.

Cape Girardeau CWU

The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met for a board meeting on Aug. 1 at First General Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. In lieu of the Bible study, Dolly Jewell and Joyce King reported on the 2008 Ecumenical Women's Gathering sponsored by Church Women United in Independence, Mo., which was held June 19 through 22. The theme of "To claim a new vision," included workshops on "equip, empower, engage and envision." The national president, Gail Mengal, is from Independence. There were Bible studies, workshops, small group meetings and the KALOMOT which encompasses states in the mid-America area. Each evening was a special celebration in which speakers spoke on the theme of the conference. Many projects were presented in displays by the different agencies represented. Some of the agencies included UNICEF, Heifer Project, used cell phone collection to be refurbished for the elderly, abused women and other areas. Both reported that the conference was a wonderful experience and meeting women from all over the world who are involved with Church Women United was the high point.

Shirley Patterson presided over the board meeting which she opened with prayer. The minutes were approved as read and Martha Sanderson, treasurer, gave her report and discussed the CROP sale and luncheon results. The report is filed with the minutes.

There was a discussion on the CROP sale and it was decided that a group will meet and discuss the project. There were many concerns about the sale and how we might do things better. The meeting will be held Monday at the home of Carol Simons.

Upcoming events include the Awareness Luncheon to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Maple United Methodist Church. Members are asked to bring a salad and a friend to the event. The items for the Festival of Sharing will be dedicated.

World Community Day will be held at 9 a.m. on Nov. 7 at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Other business included a report from the nominating committee with names for officers for 2009. The slate will be presented to the board in November and voted at World Community Day.

Members were reminded about saving box tops for education and labels. Adopt-a-leader notes will be passed out at the meeting to be held Monday.

The Mini Festival of Sharing will be held on Oct. 11 at the Methodist Church in Dexter, Mo. Joyce King and her husband will be going to the Festival of Sharing to be held in Sedalia, Mo., on Oct. 18 and if anyone would like to ride with them should contact her.

Jewell made a motion to give a donation to Jared Ritter, who ran between Cape Girardeau and Jackson recently to raise money for wells in Africa.

Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club

The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met Aug. 11 at China Buffet in Perryville, Mo., with Doris Hurst presiding.

Cynthia Alfaro gave the program. Alfaro is the Masonic Home Representative of the 49th District of the Grand Chapter of OES.

Laura Course was hostess for the social hour.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the Country Kettle in Biehle, Mo. Mary Mouser and Lill Birkman will serve as co-hostesses.

The program will be presented by a nurse from Saint Francis Medical Center.

Town & Country FCE

The Town and Country FCE Club met Aug. 14 at the home of Linda Thompson. Sue Jones presided over the business meeting. All members were present and turned in their membership forms and dues for 2009.

Thank you notes were received from The Salvation Army, Ratliff Care Center, Safe House for Women, Jackson Food Pantry and Young American 4-H Club.

Mary Klaproth attended the National FCE Conference held in Burlington, Vt., in July and gave a report on the conference. She also received notification that the International Report she prepared for Cape Girardeau County received first place and her international essay received first place. The awards will be presented at the State FCE Annual Conference to be held in Cape Girardeau Oct. 2 and 3. Klaproth will attend the leader planning meeting to be held Tuesday.

Members will give bingo prizes to The Lutheran Home in September. Judy Niswonger will check into obtaining a booth for the club at the Osage Community Garage Sale that will be held on Nov. 8.

Plans were finalized for the club to put up their booth for the SEMO District Fair on Sept. 6. Members will attend the fair as a group on Sept. 9.

Klaproth reminded members of the FCE trips to Stages for "The Music Man" on Sept. 27 and to see the St. Louis Symphony on Dec. 19.

A letter was received regarding the Cape Girardeau County FCE project for Christmas. Members will participate by donating various items of clothing with a drop box at the University of Missouri Extension Office in Jackson.

Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Cracker Barrel.

Jones presented the program on microwave cooking.

The next meeting wil be at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the home of Klaproth. Recipes were given out to members to prepare for the international Mexican meal.

American Legion Post 158

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met on July 8 with David Hitt, commander, presiding over the meeting.

Officers for 2008-2009 were elected. They are Hitt, commander; Lawson Burgfeld, first vice commander; John Hopkins, second vice commander; Jim Roche, adjutant; Larry Koehler, finance officer; Bill Poe, service officer; Jim Nelson, historian; David Ludwig, Americanism chairman; Julius Philips, chaplain; Gerry Keene, sergeant at arms; and Dick Decker and P.M. Kurre, three-year trustees.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as written. Burgfeld report that there are 616 members.

Koehler gave the finance report and the honor guard report. Bill Adams gave the trustee's report. Virgil Whitener gave the house report and Bill Sullivan gave the club room report. Lou Crites gave the dance report. Keith Seabaugh reported on visitation and discussed the convention at Missouri Boy's State.

Nelson gave the public relations' report. The contributions to the American Legion Memorial Scholarship were Post 158 club room in memory of Barney Beussink and from Ray Powell.

Poe mentioned he would not longer be able to be the chairman of Homecomers.

Camp SEMO Wappapello board wanted to thank the legion for the donation of the flag for their camp.

There will be an honor guard meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary met Aug. 13. Patsy Kimbrel, president, presided over the meeting.

School supplies were brought to the meeting and Linda Kern will deliver them to Jefferson Elementary School. Food and paper products were brought for the Red Star Food Pantry.

Iola Amelunke presented Kimbrel with a history book of events the past year.

A memorial service was held for deceased member, Ginger Beaudean.

Annual obligations will be paid and sent to the auxiliary state office by Myrna Powers, treasurer. Juanita Cook reported on the naturalization ceremony held on July 11 at the Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr. U.S. Courthouse. The American Legion provided the color guard.

Dorothy Klein made a motion to allow Powers, community chairman, to purchase snack food and drinks for the Alternative School. It was voted to sponsor a girl scout troop at St. Mary Cathedral School.

One of the completed quilts was on display to be presented to the Revival Center, a homeless shelter. A donation will be sent to CrimeStoppers.

Rosemarie Havak, the newly installed department president, has chosen to help fund the Fisher House being constructed at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis as her project.

Amelunke and Powers attended the annual American Legion Auxiliary convention held in Jefferson City, Mo., last month. Powers announced the awards the local unit and 14th district won. The 14th district received the best in the stand e for chaplain district report, best national security, best unit report recognizing women veterans. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Unit 63 for nominating the winner of the 14th district nurse's scholarship.

On Sept. 10, the group will car pool to the veteran's cemetery in Bloomfield, Mo., at 9:30 a.m., from the legion hall. Lunch will be held at the home of member, Reba Strayhorn, in Advance, Mo.

Membership dues need to be paid to Frieda Howard as soon as possible.
