New Salem UMW
The New Salem United Methodist Women of Daisy met Aug. 10 at the home of Roberta Seabaugh with 10 members present. The meeting was opened by Dorothy Hahs, president.
There were 35 sick/shut-in calls made in July. Barbara Brown reported on the nursing home visitation for July. The visitation committee for September will be Colleen Lukefahr and Seabaugh.
Correspondence from the "Mission Voice" was read. The fall district meeting will be held Sept. 17 in Gordonville, and items for the Festival of Sharing in October will need to be taken to the church by Sept. 18. Verla Mangels reported on the picnic for September and gave each member their list of what to bring.
The apple butter project will be discussed at the September meeting.
It was decided to hold the Vigortone dinner again in October. A sound system for the fellowship hall was again discussed, and it will be presented at the next church board meeting.
Jackie Kurre presented the program, and Seabaugh was in charge of a game before refreshments.
The next meeting will be Sept. 6 in the church fellowship hall.
The American Legion Auxiliary met Aug. 10 for a luncheon with Gerri Stone and Edna Smith serving as hostesses. Betty Cato, vice president, presided over the business meeting. The auxiliary's charter was draped in memory of Juanita Popp.
A thank-you note was received from the American Red Cross for sponsoring a blood drive in July. A note was received from Brianna LeGrand, who attended the American Legion Auxiliary's Girls State.
A donation was made to the Community Counseling Center and to Parkview State School.
Marilyn Ritter will take school supplies from the auxiliary to Jefferson Elementary School.
Peggy Blaylock received a potted plant for having the best Americanism report in the district. Myrna Powers received word from the state convention that she had the best unit chaplain report and also the best chaplain book. Freida Howard won the best field service report from the state. She was also recognized for Unit 63's membership making goal.
The video "Story of a River City" was shown. The next meeting will be Sept. 14 when the group will take a walking tour of the murals of Cape Girardeau and then have lunch at Port Cape.
The FCE Wonderworkers Extension Club met at the home of Nell Kieninger on Aug. 11. Margie Swan was welecomed as a visitor.
Kieninger gave the program on Alaska. A report on the American Red Cross blood drive held in June was given, and members gave reports on their volunteer hours.
Membership dues were paid for the coming year and the 2006 FCE membership forms were filled out.
The election of 2006 officers was held. They are Joy Engelhart, chairwoman; Nelda Starzinger, vice chairwoman; and Margie E. Reisenbichler, secretary/treasurer/reporter.
The program "Something Just for Me" was given by Margie E. Reisenbichler.
The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the home of Margie W. Reisenbichler. The program will be given by Engelhart.
The Hi-CotN Dance Club board recently announced the following new board members for 2005-2006: Jeremy Glastetter, president; Christina Grantham, vice president; Wes Hamm, secretary; Christy Hinds, treasurer; Melinda Whitticre, social director; Lora Estes, dance coordinator; and Patricia Cobb, public relations.
Hi-CotN Dance Club meets every Thursday at American Legion Post 63 in Cape Girardeau for dance lessons. Beginner country line dance instructions are held from 6:30 to 7 p.m., and line and couple dancing will be held from 7 to 11 p.m.
A public dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the post.
The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its monthly meeting on Aug. 2 at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Debi Oliver of the Cape Girardeau Police Department presented a program on domestic violence. She gave information regarding characteristics of the individuals involved in the circle of abuse, abuse patterns and how law enforcement intervenes on domestic violence calls.
Continued planning efforts were made regarding the Women of Achievement Luncheon to be held in October. Dr. Linda Godwin, an area native who is now an astronaut with NASA, will be the Celebration Award recipient.
An update was also given regarding the District 7 conference to be held in Cape Girardeau Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.
The coordinating team of the Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson met in the fellowship hall on Aug. 19 for the annual planning meeting. Shirley Hutton, moderator, passed around copies of the agenda.
It was decided not to pursue selling Peruvian merchandise again this year.
Mona Hamilton, missions chairman, told the group contributions to the Renaissance Project will be welcomed by the UCC Church when the van is on their parking lot. The date will be verified and published in the church bulletin.
Jonell McNeely, church world service representative, verified contributions made toward the layette kit project.
Molly May Lowes presented the budget for 2006, and no changes were needed. She will present it to the session at the appropriate time.
Jean Kurre made a motion that the group pays for faucets for the three sinks as a contribution to the kitchen overhaul project. Fran Reid seconded it, and the motion passed.
Hutton suggested that a memorial service be held at the January meeting for deceased members. All members agreed it was a good idea, and it will be voted on at the September Circle meetings.
Carolyn Thompson received many ideas for one or several short social outings. She will decide and make plans during the year.
Danna Lape, Parents As Teachers instructor in the Jackson School District and member of First Presbyterian, has requested the group's assistance with child care when she has MOPS meetings every third Thursday at the church. Those willing to commit are to contact her as soon as possible.
Kurre, circle chairman, will meet with Hutton to update circle lists. The need of a new church directory was discussed, and those willing to commit to working on that project are to contact Hutton.
Program speakers for the quarterly Presbyterian Women meetings were approved.
