VFW 3838 Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post 3838 met Aug. 10. Sheila Allen, president, presided over the meeting. Sherri Montgomery was accepted for membership.
The minutes of the last meeting were read by Glenneta Vogelsang, secretary. They were approved as read. The treasurer's report was read by Debby Griffin. Bills were presented and approved for payment.
The auxiliary will collect supplies for soldiers in Iraq. A pickup box will be placed in the canteen, along with a list of supplies needed.
Buddy Poppy plans were discussed, along with an upcoming Little Mr. and Miss Senior and Pet Buddy Poppy contest.
The auxiliary will participate in a new project called the Wreath of Hope. There will be two wreaths on display at the national convention.
Volunteers for bingo at the Missouri Veterans Home are needed on the fourth Saturday of each month. Volunteers should arrived by 1:30 p.m. to assist the veterans.
The volunteer of the year award will be presented in April.
Judy Thrower spoke about veterans eligible for the Silver Rose and encouraged everyone to contact their congressman so that veterans receive funding for veterans programs.
Georgia Burgfeld asked for help encouraging people to pay their dues and working to bring new members into the auxiliary. Also, members are asked to save Campbell's soup labels.
The Voice of Democracy and Patriotic Art contests were discussed. The deadline this year is Nov. 1. The schools should be contacted now to encourage students to participate in these events.
The VFW family picnic will be held Sept. 24 at the VFW lakes. If it rains, it will be held at the post. Ladies from the auxiliary are encouraged to bring a covered dish and a dessert. Desserts will also be sold to raise money for cancer research.
Dues will increase from $15 to $20 on Jan. 1. Life memberships can also be obtained.
Plans for the SEMO District Fair were discussed.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the post.
The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 met Aug. 7.
Denise Stewart, executive director of the Otahki Girl Scout Council, gave the program "Scouting Today -- New Directions."
The next meeting will be a lunch meeting at noon Sept. 11. Members are to bring a salad or dessert.
