Lamplighters FCE
The Lamplighters FCE Club met July 20 at the home of Brenda Joggerst. Plans for a display booth at SEMO District Fair will be formed at a meeting of the fair committee.
JoAnn Hahs, president, reported that Lamplighters received a HEED grant. The club will match the grant funds to purchase "Beginning to Read" books (preschool to second grade) for the Riverside Regional Library. The selection of 170 easy-reader books was made by a library committee, including Lamplighters Club members Linda Sebaugh, Gayla Volz and Hahs.
Roberta Seabaugh, Linda Freeman and Hahs took 20 dozen cookies to Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship open house.
Teresa Hinkebein gave a program, "My Food Pyramid." The next meeting will be Thursday at the home of Jackie Kurre.
The American Legion Auxiliary 158 had a noon luncheon Aug. 1.
Deanna Whitlow and Cheryl Lichtenegger gave a report on their week at Girls State in Warrensburg, Mo. They were sponsored by the Noon Optimist Club. Other girls who went were Lauren Ressel and Rachel Poythress, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary; Sarah Detring, sponsored by the Rotary Club, and Sara Koppenool, sponsored by the Evening Optimist Club.
After the luncheon, a meeting was called to order by the president.
Barbara Yallaly of unit 63 installed the officers for the coming year. They are Carolyn Myer, president; Rosalee Sides, first vice president; Vickie Moore, second vice president; Nancy Prince, secretary-treasurer; Betty Hoffmeister, historian; Marjorie Grindstaff, chaplain; Doris Criddle, sergeant at arms; and Bonnie Smith, page.
The minutes of the July meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was also approved.
Correspondence was received from Ressel. A thank-you card was received from the Beussink family and the Hinkebein family.
Unit 158 sponsored bingo at the Missouri Veterans Home on July 19 and served doughnuts July 28.
Dues for 2007 should be sent in before December.
Upcoming days to remember are bingo at the veterans home at 2 p.m. today; doughnuts served at the veterans home at 9 a.m. Aug. 25; and the next auxiliary meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 5. This will be the ice cream social. Volunteers should call Sides to help at these events.
The Town & Country FCE Club met Aug. 10 at the home of Linda Thompson. Lois Seabaugh presided over the business meeting. Sue Jones reported the club had received a thank-you note for supporting the U.S. troops overseas and a "Friends of our troops" certificate. Members are to bring 10 Christmas cards to the October meeting. These cards will be mailed to the troops for the holidays.
It was decided to deliver four large watermelons to the children at Cottonwood Treatment Center for the summer project. It was also decided to contributed $25 to the "Pennies for Friendship" campaign.
Mary Klaproth, Seabaugh and Thompson reported on attending the National FCE 70th anniversary Celebration and Annual Conference held July 21 through 23 in Nashville, Tenn. Six members from Cape Girardeau County attended. Klaproth also reported on receiving notification that she is second-place winner on the public policy report book that she compiled from the Cape Girardeau County reports at the state conference to be held in Columbia, Mo., on Oct. 20.
Several members indicated they will attend the state conference to be held Oct. 18 through 20 with early bird registration deadline being Sept. 1.
Leader training meeting for the coming year will be 9 a.m. Aug. 22 at Perry County Extension Center in Perryville, Mo. Quarterly council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Extension Center in Jackson.
Klaproth, FCE tour chairman, announced the tour committee has planned a detailed itinerary for the Nashville trip to the Opryland Hotel including many shows Dec. 15 through 17. A $25 reservation fee is due by Oct. 25 and can be mailed to Mary Klaproth, 153 Grandview, Jackson, Mo. 63755, or for more information, call 243-5426. This trip is open to all FCE members and friends.
Plans were discussed on the booth display for the SEMO District Fair in September and for the annual garage sale at the Osage Community Centre in November.
Officers for 2007 were elected. They are: Klaproth, president; Jones, vice president; Linda Thompson, secretary; Carolyn Thompson, treasurer; Judy Niswonger, reporter; Darlene McCain, songs/games; and Doris Wilkinson, cards/flowers.
A program on sewing shortcuts was presented by Jones and Wilkinson. Club Out will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Cracker Barrel.
The American Legion Auxiliary met Aug. 9 for a luncheon. Guests included six girls who attended Missouri Girls State, mothers of three of the girls and Vicki Moore and Nancy Prince. Moore and Prince came to install elected officers.
Before the installation, Frieda Howard, Vergie Templeton and Peggy Blaylock volunteered to serve along with the officers on the excessive board.
Patsy Kimbrel, president, presided over the meeting. Marilyn Ritter and Kimbrel draped the charter in memory of Geraldine Kassel. Ten members will serve as chairmen to promote programs throughout the year.
Correspondence included thank-you notes from the American Legion for holding a luncheon in June to recognize and honor members who served in the military and women who lost a son or brother in the military and from Bonnie Smith, secretary of the Jackson American Legion Auxiliary, for including them in the luncheon.
Volunteers were asked to take training to qualify to offer aid in the event of a disaster. A Habitat for Humanity house will be dedicated at 5 p.m. Aug. 20. Myrna Powers will attend and will present a welcoming basket with a U.S. flag kit.
Financial obligations to the department were voted on and Powers, treasurer, will send the check. Powers asked permission to earmark our USO donation to St. Louis. Missouri now has another USO at Fort Leonard Wood.
Blaylock, Americanism chairman, showed a DVD, "For Which It Stands." This DVD has been distributed to the upper elementary grades.
Members will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13 for a one-tank trip.
Kage FCE Club met Thursday at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center with Opal Collins serving as hostess and Dortha Strack presiding.
A certificate was presented to Strack for the club's support of the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. Edna Hey presented certificates to several members and to the club for participation in fan mail for the troops. Kage FCE was number one in Missouri and number two in the nation last year. Individuals sending 50 or more greetings also received certificates. The mailing for 2006 will take place after the club's October meeting.
Reports were heard on the recent blood drive sponsored by the Cape Girardeau County FCE Clubs, on the Diabetes camp held Aug. 3 and 4, and on the National FCE Conference attended by Jobyne Daume, Martha Slaten and Strack.
Members who clean eye glasses for patients at The Lutheran Home signed up to help through the week of Sept. 21.
It was voted to provide money for textbook rental for a nontraditional student at Southeast Missouri State University.
Preparations are in progress for the club's booth at the SEMO District Fair. Joan Meyer, Barbara Marshall and Shirley Rhabar will work on this project.
Inez Statler gave a program on driving uninsured.
The next meeting will hosted by Margaret Crites on Sept. 21.
The United Methodist Women of New Salem Church of Daisy met at the home of Betty Hahs on Aug. 9. Dorothy Hahs, president, presided over the meeting.
There were 16 sick/shut-in calls made during July.
Twelve health kits are ready to be delivered to the Festival of Sharing in October. Jackie Kurre reported that the microphone to the sound system was worked on and a shelf was being built to hold the new sound system. Colleen Lukefahr report new information of prices, color, etc., on the T-shirt project.
School supplies were brought to the meeting by each member and will be donated to the Oak Ridge School. There was discussion on how to celebrate an elderly secret pal's birthday and was the UMWs could help a family dealing with an illness. The picnic committee will meet and plan next month's picnic and assignments will be given to members.
Kurre presented the program following by refreshments. The next meeting will be the picnic to be held in the church fellowship hall Sept. 6. A jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly should be brought by each member.
