The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held their meeting on July 19, in the Huels Room. Brenda Kuhn read excerpts about the religious persecution in Mexico in the 20th century. We then said a "Pray for Government" by Archbishop John Carroll written in 1791.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. There was no meeting in June.
Attendance: Kate Schaefer, president; Mary Ann Hennecke, vice president; Pat Eftink, treasurer; and Imelda Nenninger, secretary.
Eftink distributed the financial report for the year that ended May 31 and also the treasurer's report ending July 18. Judy Stricker and Irene Stevens audited the books and all was in order.
Lucille Zerr passed out copies of the minutes from the Region 7 meeting held on June 19 at St. Joseph Parish in Scott City. Several changes to the attached list of officers were made.
Commission Reports:
Kuhn, spirituality commission, reported on the successful Vacation Bible School.
Zerr said that 14 CCW members work twice a week at the Food Pantry.
Schaefer read a letter from Jackie Schmidt, province director, concerning the funds needed by National Council. A copy of a letter from Rebecca Woodhull, president-elect, with suggestions for fund raisers was distributed.
Volunteers to help serve desserts at the Parish Picnic to be held on Aug. 26 should contact Stevens.
The next Region 7 meeting will be held on Sept. 25 at St. Joseph Church, Advance, Mo. St. Mary CCW will host the Nov. 20 meeting.
The fall bake sale will be held the first weekend in December if the cafeteria is available.
This is Schaefer's and Hennecke's last meeting as officers. There will be installation of new officers at the Aug. 16 meeting.
A belated birthday celebration for Zerr was held.
Becky McLean won 50/50.
Stevens and the July circle provided the refreshments.
The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association met Aug. 1 the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. There were four members, Tom Frasher, Melody Hagans, Richard Proffer, and Larry Simon, present.
There was no treasurer's report.
The June 14 student picnic was briefly discussed. The chapter was very satisfied with the event. There were about 65 people in attendance, including 17 students. Another event will be planned for June 2013. A tentative date for the picnic is June 13, 2013.
A check for $328.34 (the remainder of the Chapter Allotment) was received from the MAA to partially reimburse the chapter for student picnic expenses.
Simon reported that the chapter may not be working in the 4-H tent at the SEMO District Fair this year because consideration is being given to have another youth group work during the day on Wednesday. We will know more next week.
In an effort to improve attendance, the chapter decided to move the meeting night from the first Wednesday to the first Thursday of the month. The next meetings will be Nov. 1, Feb. 7, 2013, and May 2, 2013. The meeting time will remain at 7 p.m.
Some upcoming events and activities were discussed. The chapter will probably participate in the Homecoming blood drive and a Homecoming volunteer activity in October, ring the bell for the Salvation Army in December, have a Founder's Day dinner and silent auction in February, host a Movie Night in May, and have the student picnic in June.
Simon passed around a thank-you card and picture that the chapter received from Big Brothers/Big Sisters for treating them to a showing of "Rango" at the Cape 14 Cine. For some of the children in their group, that was the first time they had been to a movie. Simon indicated that the movie "Mirror-Mirror" would be a good candidate for next year's event.
Hagans suggested that the chapter consider having the Founder's Day event on a Friday, rather than a Thursday and see if a local newsperson would be the guest speaker. Simon will check with Dexter BBQ regarding Friday nights. Hagans will handle the contact with the newsperson.
Frasher plans to attend MAA Leader's Weekend in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 14.
The possibility of having some type of social event, such as a visit to a winery, was discussed. Proffer suggested that we consider attending a Mississippi River Hills Association Farm to Food event. These events are held at area farms and include a multicourse dinner of local foods and wines. Proffer thought that the next such event would be in September. He will check and provide us details. There was much interest in this type event.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the Extension Center in Jackson.
