Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met July 6 at Capetown Assisted Living and July 20 at Port Cape Girardeau.

The club was invited to Capetown Assisted Living for a tour of the new building and a meal. Maryla Simmons, activity director, made the arrangements, and Shamela Limbaugh, administrator, directed the tour and shared many interesting facts on the new facility.

At the July 20 meeting, the club voted to again deliver fans to the Salvation Army for Project Keep Cool. The club was able to purchase 15 fans that will be used to give to anyone who may need them. Guest speaker was Terry Ashby, donor recruiter for the American Red Cross. He spoke about the shortage of donors. Phil Ballas, district director from the Lincoln Land District, and his wife, Jan Ballas, from Belleville, Ill., were guests.

Max Jaeger sent a letter thanking the club for inviting him to the picnic and having the honor of presenting 50-year plaques to John Eggimann and Clarence Lohmann, charter members of the club.

The next meeting will be Tuesday at Port Cape. Larry Simon is scheduled to present the program.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of the Cape Girardeau area met Aug. 3 at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The featured speaker was Irene Aiyho, who shared her experiences and discussed the status of women in Kenya. Details were shared on how limited women's rights and opportunities are in Kenya for education, employment, marriage and divorce and property ownership.

Upcoming service projects for the Cape Girardeau Public Library and the Missouri Mentoring Program were discussed along with further planning for the Women of Achievement Luncheon to be held Sept. 30.

Delegates Ellen Dillon and Marcia Southard-Ritter reported the results of the Zonta International Convention and a draft of the 2004-2005 club goals was handed out to members.

High-Noon Toastmasters

Joyanna Bates spoke on international teaching at the High-Noon Toastmasters Club on Aug. 3. She discussed her experience at the International School in Djarkarta, Indonesia. She is currently on the faculty at Sacred Heart School in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

The theme for Table Topics was education. The Table Topics part of the meeting focuses on helping a person overcome initial inhibition and become a better conversationalist.
