American Legion Post 158
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson met June 12 with Larry Koehler, commander, presiding.
Jack Latimer conducted the election. He read nominations and asked for any nominations from the floor for each office three times. Richard Aguilar, nominee for finance officer, asked that his name be withdrawn as he will be moving out of the area. Koehler was nominated as finance officer. Motion was made to accept nominees by acclimation. The motion was seconded and passed.
The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as printed.
Aguilar gave the financial report. P.M. Kurre reported there are 603 members. Mike Strack reported the city will begin putting out stakes at Russell Heights Cemetery. The City Cemetery will be done later. He gave out several flags including 58 grave flags. Koehler presented Strack with a framed picture of Strack presenting a flag in recognition of his efforts as flag chairman.
Jim Nelson reported contributions made to the post American Legion Memorial Scholarship fund from: John Crites in memory of Jerry Hinkebein; from the Legion Club Room and Jim and Evelyn Nelson in memory of Jeff Henry; Naomi Hartle in memory of Dale Hartle; and Jim Nelson in memory of Willard Hetzler.
Keith Seabaugh reported visitations. He presented the post commander a Round-Up Certificate from the National Commander.
David Ludwig reported the Memorial Day event was successful. Virgil Whitener gave the house report and Latimer gave the club report.
Ken Koehler reported on the baseball team and presented the first-pitch ball thrown out by Larry Koehler to him.
Leonard Adams gave a report on the dances and updated the contract for renting the building.
Larry Koehler announced the 2006 membership award and presented membership recruiting pens to Charles Shultz, Albert Lowes, Richard Welker, Joe Smith, James Roche, E.P. Kurre, Jim Nelson, Jack Latimer, Mike Strack, Richard Decker, Vincent Schwartz, Milford Seabaugh, Larry Koehler, Lou Crites, Lloyd Law, Leonard Adams, Charles Hutson, Michale Hyson, P.M. Kurre, and Harold Landgraf. In addition, two members, Gary Kamp and Byron Fluegge, received department commander pins, J.W. "Bill" Poe earned a gold cap star, department commander pin and a membership recruiter pin. Poe also earned a plaque, which will be presented to him at the department convention this year.
Dr. Charles Prewitt's special plaza project was brought up. A motion was made to provide $1,000 to support the project. There was a second followed by a discussion. Larry Koehler tabled the motion as amounts more than $1,000 must first be presented to the executive committee. The executive committee will review the motion and it will be brought up at the next meeting.
Lou Crites recognized Dave Willer for all his help with the hall.
Motion was made to provide $200 for the honor guard picnic. The motion was seconded and passed.
Larry Koehler recognized Gary King for helping get the computers squared away.
Hutson announced that past commanders will be at 6:30 p.m. July 19 at Delmonico's Restaurant.
Several thank-you notes from families were read along with a thank you from the VA Home for being a cooperate sponsor for the fund-raising golf tournament.
The Lamplighters FCE met June 15 at Saffron Restaurant in Cape Girardeau for a birthday bash. A short business meeting preceded the party. JoAnn Hahs, president, opened the meeting.
Linda Sebaugh gave a devotional, "A poem about our girlfriends." Hahs put a small silver favor by each place to celebrate the "All Star Club" status awarded to Lamplighters.
Dorothy Hahs and Jackie Kurre gave a report that groceries and passes for Jackson City Pool were given to the club's adopted family.
A shelf was erected in the lobby of the Daisy Post Office for outdated books give by Riverside Regional Library. It was agreed to use proceeds from the club's garage sale to purchase new children's books for the library.
Birthday gifts were exchanged by secret pals. After lunch, the group toured downtown Cape Girardeau.
The next meeting will be July 20 at the home of Brenda Joggerst.
