Jackson American Legion

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post in Jackson met July 8. Commander Byron Fluegge opened the meeting. Gerald Adams gave a summary of American Legion baseball and the new batting cage. He introduced coach Bill Cosgrove, who reported the cage construction cost was $13,000. All but $800 had been raised. Bill Poe moved the post provide the rest of the money. It was determined that this matter has to be taken through the executive committee. The motion was withdrawn.

Minutes of the June meeting were approved. Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. It was accepted.

Jim Nelson reported a contribution to the American Legion Post 158 Memorial Scholarship fund: The American Legion Post 158 Auxiliary in memory of Anita Schulte.

Poe moved that the post give $200 to each individual attending the convention to help cover their expenses. The motion seconded and carried.

Eastside Homemakers

The Eastside Homemakers Club met at Riverside Regional Library on July 16. Patsy Johnson portrayed Betsy Ross and gave a presentation on the history of the American flag.

Sally Powell gave the devotional, "Freedom is Not Free," and Janet Piepenbrok gave a reading on "You're Probably from Southeast Missouri ..."

Rachel Fasnacht and her son were visitors.

The next meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at Woodard's Restaurant.

St. Mary CWC

The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met on July 17 in the St. Mary Cathedral School cafeteria.

Barbara Yallaly presented the program on "Our Flag." A quiz was given and American flags presented to those having the most correct answers.

Members were reminded to work on items for the Christmast craft sale to be held in December.

Plans are being made to hold a garage sale in the school gym.

The next meeting will be Aug. 21, when the youth group will share its experience of attending the Steubenville Conference in Springfield, Mo.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau will now meet in the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University.

Speakers for the August meeting will be Erin Schloss, victims advocate, and Brenda Sikes, clinical director, both with the SEMO Network Against Sexual Violence.

During July, club members participated in the Relay for Life and in building brick walls at The Red House. There will be another workday in August.
