The Missouri Democratic 2011 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner was held June 17 in St. Louis, and Mary S. "Cindy" Jenks of Fairdealing, Mo., received the Outstanding Local Party Member Award. Jenks is the first recipient of this award, whicht was presented by Missouri Democratic Party chairwoman Susan Montee.
Jenks was recently chosen Woman of the Year by the Missouri Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs. She was also appointed as corresponding secretary on the National Federation of Democratic Women Executive Board by president Janice Davis at its annual convention in May, held in Washington, D.C.
Seven Missouri women attended the convention, including two from Southeast Missouri, Linda Sanders of Jackson and Jenks. Sanders is the newly elected president of the 8th District Missouri Federation Women's Democratic Clubs and Jenks is the immediate past president 8th District MFWDC.
At its annual officer and board member installation banquet, the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau awarded Trudy G. Lee the 2011 Rush H. Limbaugh Sr. Rotarian of the Year Award for outstanding service to the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau.
Lee is the director of planned giving at Southeast Missouri University Foundation. She serves the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club as immediate past president, secretary and chairwoman of the community service committee. Lee has been a member of the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club since February 2002.
This year, club president Tracey Glenn presented Distinguished Service Awards for outstanding service to the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau to Kathy Bertrand and Phillip Smith.
Bertrand, vice president/senior commercial loan officer at the Bank of Missouri, joined the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club in February 2009. She was honored for her extensive work as the club treasurer including implementing a new financial management software program.
Smith, owner of Phillip B. Smith Architect LLC, joined the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club in May 2003. Smith was honored for his tireless efforts working on the club's Soap Box Derby fundraiser.
Rotary district governor Todd Lindley installed the officers and board members for the 2011-2012 Rotary year: Betty Martin, president; Tracey Glenn, past president; Stan Irwin, president-elect; Trudy Lee, secretary; Kathy Bertrand, treasurer; Ron Kirby, sergeant at arms; and board members, Robin Cole, Mike Domian, Stan Irwin, Cheryl Klueppel, Bill Prost and Phillip Smith. Dr. Gerald McDougall will also serve on the board, but he was unable to attend.
Lamplighters FCE Club carpooled to Ava-Campbell Hill area in Southern Illinois to visit the Country Store and the hydroponic tomato greenhouse June 17. This was the club's annual birthday celebration. There were 13 members in attendance. At noon, they gathered at the Pioneer Cabin in Willisville, Ill., for a meal and their Secret Pal birthday gift exchange.
No business was conducted, but members were informed of a need for Joplin, Mo., schools -- 266 classrooms were damaged or destroyed in May's tornado. Classrooms can be supported by cash donations or by "adopting a classroom." The club is considering how to best meet the need.
Members are reminded that July will be a crafting month. They will be learning how to make potato jewelry and how to recycle plastic bags. The meeting will be held in the home of Bert Seyer on July 21.
Melva Floyd was hostess for June 21 meeting in Oak Ridge at her home with 12 members present, Jean Rehak, president, called the meeting to order.
Rehak read "Hearth Fire Series #11" was read about our U.S.A. Flag.
Billie Criddle giving the treasurer's report, and it was approved.
Reports from the June 2 quarterly council meeting was given by Rehak.
It was noted that June 20 was the last workday for the summer on "Love Given by the Pounds" for Touch Point Autism Center where several members from Oak Ridge FCE took part in making blankets, neck snakes and lap pads. Members attending were Betty Dellinger, Pat Hecht and Rehak.
Flowers were sent to Peggy Barks whose husband passed away on June 20 at Missouri Veterans Home.
International meals from Spain (The country for 2011 whose cultures and food are studied) were discussed and it was decided to serve food items later this summer.
Oak Ridge FCE would like to send a big appreciation to our sister club Town and Country for their generous support with our Christmas giveaway with 28 package of children clothing.
Oak Ridge FCE project of the month was helping a mother with a small daughter by buying her several baby clothes which was very much appreciated.
Members Barbara Barks and Dellinger helped with Jackson Elks Lodge in collecting $675 plus two truckloads of cleaning supplies and other household items which were being sent to Joplin's relief.
Coins for Friendship was given and collected.
A 90th birthday celebration is planned by Ruby Hitt at 2:30 p.m. July 16 at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
