The Town and Country FCE Club met July 11 for a dinner meeting at Pizza Inn in Fruitland. Sue Jones and Lois Seabaugh were in charge of arrangements. Jones, president, presided over a brief business meeting. Linda Thompson read, "The week of the retiree" and Mary Klaproth read the, "The nine warning signs of junkitis." Pennies for Coins for Friendship were collected. A motion was approved to donate $25 to Coins for Friendship. Darlene McCain will take care of this. Klaproth will do a trivia calendar for September as a fundraising activity.
Klaproth announced she received word the Cape Girardeau County Public Policy and International Reports she prepared have received first place and the awards will be presented at the MAFCE Annual Conference in Jefferson City, Mo., to be held Sept. 19 and 20. Several members plan to attend the conference. Joyce King, Karen Murphy and Donna Woolsey are eligible to apply for a conference scholarship.
Members completed and delivered the Show Me Justice Games to the Jackson R-2 Schools, St. Paul Lutheran School and Immaculate Conception School. The grant report and evaluation is complete and will be mailed to the MFFCE chairperson, Nancy Richmond.
Club members received a certificate of membership from "Friends of our Troops" in recognition of patriotic support of the Mail for the Troops Campaign.
Jones announced the international meal on India will be held in her home on Sept. 12 and the recipes to prepare for the dinner will be given to the members at the Aug. 8 meeting.
Five members went on the FCE sponsored trip to The Muny in St. Louis to see the musical "Nunsense" on July 2.
Klaproth planned to attend the National FCE Conference in Fargo, N.D., held Thursday through today.
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Jackson Homecomers. The door prize was won by Karen Murphy.
Members brought food items to be donated to the Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry and Joyce King will deliver the items to the food pantry.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the home of Thompson with Klaproth presenting the program on the dangers of vitamin supplements. Officers will be elected at that meeting and club dues for the year 2014 will be collected.
The July 10 meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary was attended by 18 members. Special guests were Meagan Schmittzehe, her parents, Steven and Debbie; Jessica Westrich and father, Larry; and Sydney Messerili and her mother, Pam. The young ladies each gave a report on their experience while attending Girls State.
Edna Smith, Jerri Stone and Irene Winston were hostesses and served pizza and desserts for lunch.
Winston won the 50/50 drawing.
Minutes of the May and June meetings were accepted as read. The report of the treasurer was read and will be filed for audit.
Poppy Day was successful with $4,322.36 in donations collected. These funds are designated for veterans. The auxiliary's portion of $280.50 was collected at the July 4th auction held at the picnic.
The charter will be draped at the August meeting in memory of member Rosalia Scherer. A memorial donation was sent to St. Mary Cathedral in her memory.
Linda Kern, education chairman, asked members to bring socks, gloves, caps and underwear for students at Jefferson Elementary School to the August meeting.
Kern also reported the auxiliary is at 85 percent of the membership goal.
Barbara Yallaly, president, reminded everyone to continue bringing food items for Red Star food pantry. She also reminded members of the fall district meeting in Poplar Bluff, Mo., in August.
Myrna Powers, treasurer, will represent Unit 63 at the State Convention in Jefferson City, Mo., in July.
The next meeting will be Aug. 14.
