Club news 7/20/05

Kage FCE

The Kage FCE Club met on July 14 at the home of Linda Farrow. Victoria and Veronica Schabbing, members of Young Americans 4-H Club, demonstrated how to make an inside-out chocolate bundt cake.

Dortha Strack presided over the business meeting. Edna Hey explained three methods of preparing Troops Fan Mail. Christmas messages will be be prepared for mailing in October.

It was decided that the annual family chicken and dumpling dinner will be held in October. Dues for 2005 are to be paid in August along with contributions to Pennies for Friendship and Nickels for Youth.

Club members will assist with a barn dance to support Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship on Aug. 27. They will make desserts for the event.

Barbara Marshall presented a program about diabetes and living a less stressful and healthier life.

New Salem UMW

The New Salem United Methodist Women of Daisy met July 6 at the home of Verla Mangels. The meeting was opened by Dorothy Hahs, president.

There were 28 sick/shut-in calls made during the month of June. Margie Roberts reported on the nursing home visitation for June. Jackie Kurre will do a write-up of the projects UMW has completed this year.

Correspondence for last month included the Southeaster paper and thank-you notes from the Gideons and Kim Kurre and family.

The fall district meeting will be held Sept. 17 at Gordonville and the UMW annual meeting will be Sept. 24 and 25 in Columbia, Mo. Second-quarter pledges will be given to a burn victim and his family living in our community.

Mangels presented the program. The next meeting will be Aug. 10 at the home of Colleen Lukefahr.

Capaha Scottish Rite Women

The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met at Delmonico's in Jackson.

Luella Armstrong, president presided over the meeting. During the social hour, members played bingo.

The Aug. 8 meeting will be held at the Country Kettle in Biehle, Mo., with Cynthia Alfaro as hostess and Laura Corse as the program chairman.

Cape County AARP

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP No. 4041 met July 11. A slide presentation, "Cruisin' through New Zealand," was given by Grace Hoover.

Senior information day will be today, and the Salvation Army back-to-school fair will be held on July 28.

The next meeting will be on Aug. 1.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary met July 13 for a luncheon. Three young women and their parents were guests. The girls came to report on their activities at Missouri Girls State. Catherine Meyer was elected to the office of senator; Jessica Vavak was elected to the House of Representatives; and Hannah Lewis was elected as a Supreme Court judge. A note of appreciation was sent by Jami Dement. The lunch was prepared and served by Marie McElreath and Jeannett Niederkorn.

Betty Cato, vice president, conducted the business meeting. Marilyn Ritter, education chairwoman, announced it is time to collect school supplies for children at Jefferson Elementary School. Bring the supplies to the August meeting.

It was voted to continue to give a gift basket to the owner of a new home built by Habitat for Humanity. Fern Schlimme announced the auxiliary will sponsor a blood drive this month at the Red Cross office. A sign-up sheet was sent around for members to volunteer to work and bake homemade cookies.

Frieda Howard attended the SALT meeting and announced Senior Day of Information will from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. The first 100 people will get a free lunch, and there will be door prizes.

Delegates who attended the state convention held in Springfield, Mo., on July 8 through 10 reported on a successful convention. The American Legion Auxiliary's national president, Sandi Dutton, was present for the convention. She spoke to the assembly on Friday morning, and that evening a reception was held in her honor.

The district meeting will be held Aug. 7. The auxiliary's next meeting will be at noon on Aug. 10.
