Tilsit 4-H; New Salem UMW; Town & Country FCE; Kage FCE; Zonta Club

AARP Chapter 4041

The AARP Chapter 4041 met July 3 at United Methodist Church in Chaffee. Marcie Fuller, president, presided.

Dr. Frank Nickell, Southeast Missouri State University professor, gave a program on saving and using Fort D from past to present.

During the business session, items of interest were discussed including the upcoming elections and how you may obtain a photo identification.

The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 7 with Denise Stewart giving the program, "Scouting Today -- New Directions."

Tilsit 4-H

The Tilsit 4-H Club met July 6 at Gordonville Fire Station 2 near Tilsit. Matthew Golden, president, presided over the meeting. There were 18 members and 11 others present. Kelly Crites and Landon Hinkebein led the pledges, and Matthew Brucker and Collin Schabbing led the songs. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given.

The club will host countywide work day from 8 a.m. to noon July 29 at the University of Missouri Extension Office in Jackson to construct weighted blankets, vests and lap pads for autistic children. All 4-Hers are encouraged to assist with the project.

The Cape County Youth Prospect Show will be held Aug. 6 at Lazy W Arena.

Members who attended the County Achievement and County Fair reported on how they did at the fair. Tara Kirchdoerfer reported on a junior leaders exchange trip to Chillicothe, Mo.

The following groups reported on project meetings: home environment, clothing 6, and crafts. The following talks and demonstrations were given: selecting a pet rabbit, by Adam Kirchdoerfer; how to attract bluebirds, by Landon Hinkebein; making a computer project, by Jacob Aufdenberg; dealing with stress, by Heather Birk; glass etching, by Tara Kirchdoerfer; and how to make beer bread, by Katie Brucker.

The nominating committee will prepare a slate of officers.

The next meeting will be a picnic with a hot dog roast at Jackson City Park at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3.

New Salem UMW

The United Methodist Women of New Salem Church in Daisy met at the home of Dorothy Hahs on July 5 and celebrated "Christmas in July." Each member brought items for a health kit. These items were bundled into a towel, tied with a ribbon and placed under a Christmas trees. These items will be donated to the Festival of Sharing in October. Hahs, president, opened the meeting.

Correspondence included thank-you notes from Carole Jo Byrd and Addie Henley. Articles of interest from the Southeaster News were discussed. The Fall District Meeting will be in Poplar Bluff, Mo., on Sept. 9. More ideas for the Festival of Sharing were discussed. It was decided that the club's church project will be to donate paper product kits at this year's festival. Also, the donation of school supplies will be undertaken by the UMWs and the church for the month of August.

There were 29 sick/shut-in calls made during the past three months. The pledge for the second quarter will be sent to the Vision House in Cape Girardeau. It was decided that in lieu of the mother-daughter-friend banquet and the father-son-friend banquet that the events would be combined into a church birthday celebration day to be held in March 2007.

Verla Mangels and Colleen Lukefahr reported on the T-shirts. They had checked with SEMO Specialties and Sports and will receive a catalog from which to order shirts.

The Christmas program was presented by Hahs.

The next meeting will be held on Aug. 9 at the home of Betty Hahs.

Town & Country FCE

The Town & Country FCE Club met July 13 for the annual family picnic. Due to inclement weather, the location for the picnic was changed from meeting at shelter 20 in South Cape County Park to the fellowship hall at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. There were a total of 10 members and 24 family members and friends present. The club purchased fried chicken, and members brought other covered dishes to complete the meal. Sue Jones and Inez Knott were in charge of arrangements.

Blake Telle, grandson of Lois Seabaugh, and a member of Young American 4-H Club, gave a demonstration on how to make "Lemon Louie Smoothies," after which he served the drink to all present.

Seabaugh, president, presided over the business meeting. Thank-you notes were received from the Salvation Army for the two fans the club donated; from Clover Kids 4-H Camp for the club's monetary donation; and from Judy and Don Niswonger for the club's support and attendance at their wedding.

The SEMO District Fair booth was discussed. Darlene McCain will chair the project with all members serving as helpers.

Information was received that Linda Thompson will be recognized for the Missouri "Heart of FCE" nominee for 2006 for honorable mention certificate; and Mary Klaproth will be presented first place winner on the "International Report Book on Alaska" that she compiled from the Cape County Clubs' reports. both honors will be presented a the state conference banquet in Columbia, Mo., on Oct. 19.

Sue Jones reported she submitted a grant application to the FCE Missouri Association for purchase of playground equipment for Parkview State School.

Klaproth, chairman of the FCE Tour Committee, announced that reservations are still being taken for the FCE trip Sept. 9, to Draffenville, Ky., where members will see the Carl Hurley Show at the Kentucky Opry. Reservation deadline is Aug. 26, and reservations can be mailed to Carolyn Thompson, 344 County Road 465, Jackson, Mo., 63755, or call 243-2929 for more information.

Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. July 27 at Joey's Seafood Restaurant.

Kage FCE

The Kage FCE Club met July 13 at the home of Jane Clark. Guests were Bonnie Strack and her children, Belinda and Anthony.

Thank-you notes were read from Inez Statler, and the Young Americans 4-H Club for the club's contribution toward their camp for Clover Kids.

Belinda and Anthony Strack reported on their experiences at Clover Kids Camp, demonstrated their wind chimes made at camp and also their collections of plant pictures arranged on posters, one picture for each letter of the alphabet.

Shirley Rhaber reported having taken books and magazines to Monticello House in Jackson, The Lutheran Home and Life Care Center, both in Cape Girardeau. Plans are to continue this activity.

There will be a work session on July 27 at the home of Linda Farrow to prepare boxes for a diabetes camp for children that will be held Aug. 3 and 4.

A HEED grant for $500 has been received by the club for a reading program at Jefferson Elementary School called "Reading is a Grand Thing." The program will begin with the opening of school for kindergarten through second grade.

Clark presented the program on Switzerland.

The next meeting will be hosted by Opal Collins on Aug. 10.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its monthly membership meeting on July 11, in the Atrium at Dempster Hall on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.

Maria Childress and Kathy Swan provided highlights of their recent trip to the Zonta 59th International Convention held in Melbourne, Australia.

Tiffane Ryan, a senior at Southeast Missouri State University majoring in sports management, was named the recipient of the Jane Klausman Award. By receiving this local club recognition and scholarship, Ryan will be considered for the Jane Klausmen Scholarship for women in business that is awarded each year by Zonta International.

The program also included a report by Linda Garner on fund-raising ideas that were discussed at a district meeting this spring. Among the business issues discussed were the ongoing plans for the annual Women of Achievement luncheon as well as other service and fund raising projects.
