St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met May 15 in the Huels Room.

The meeting opened with May devotions and crowning of the statue of Mary by Ashley Eftink, a second grade first communicant, and then praying of the rosary.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Becky McLean, president; Mary Buxton, vice president; Pat Eftink, treasurer; and Imelda Nenninger, secretary, were present. Kate Schaefer, past president, was absent.

Eftink distributed copies of the treasurer's report. Dolores Gibbar reported that three bereavement dinners were served. Buxton reported on the spring assembly. Speakers were Carolyn King, John LaBriola and Bishop James Johnston.

Sister Rita Schonhoff has been nominated for an award from extension for her work in the diocese. See the article in April 4 Mirror. Both she and the diocese would receive money.

The Rev. Tom Kiefer said that each parish will be receiving a quilt block and some of the ladies will be contacted about completing it.

Shirley Whittard won the 50/50.

Thank you to Patricia Kelly for the refreshments and Brenda Kuhn for the program.

Our next meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 19 in the Huels Room.

The meeting closed with prayer.

John Guild NSDAR

The John Guild Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, held their May meeting at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

Reports from the 2014 state conference showed the chapter had earned Level 1 Honor Roll (highest); Chapter Scrapbook Excellent 100 percent; Beth Biri received outstanding junior runner-up as well as chapter outstanding junior; service to the Nations Veterans Certificate; DAR Project Patriot Certificate; Celebrate America Committee Recognition; and donations to Junior Bazaar Certificate.

Biri was recognized for serving as page; fourth place award for decorated Christmas tree at state headquarters Christmas open house in Booneville, Missouri.

Sam Lowes placed second in the state for Good Citizen, which comes with a certificate and monetary award. He is the son of David and Susan Lowes of Jackson. Lowes was unable to attend state conference to receive his award in person, so it was presented by Regent Pam Johnson at the May meeting.

Jessica L. Dickey was welcomed as a new member and installed by Johnson and chaplain Bonnie Macke.

The following members were nominated in April to serve as officers for the 2014-2015 term: Marti Strickland, regent; Julie Robinson, vice regent; Gwen Nussbaum, chaplain; Cheryl Cook, recording secretary; Tammy Pleimann, corresponding secretary; Lorilee Short, treasurer; Morgan Lake, registar; Beth Biri, historian; and Michelle Daughten, librarian. They were elected at the May meeting and those present were installed and will take office at the June meeting, which will be at noon June 18 at the home of Adelaide Parsons. Mary Meyer is co-hostess. This will be a fundraiser luncheon to support our veterans.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met in the church fellowship hall Tuesday with 30 members present. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, after which the unit recited the UMW Purpose. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Pam Buck, secretary, and approved as read. One piece of correspondence was read. Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave the monthly treasurer's report.

Tina Crites highlighted several books that can be found in our library. Julie Combs gave a devotion, "You Can Make a Difference," from a UMW Assembly brochure. Donna Mason reminded members that the June collection is for the Susanna Wesley Center and the September collection will be for the Festival of Sharing.

Jan Burk had several new ribbons for sale. First-time attendance ribbons were presented to Noy Bueller and Kay Thompson. Inez Statler reported she, Anna Wannamaker and Tandy Wendel had visited 15 shut-ins.

Circle reports were taken and the Mary and Martha Circle won the attendance ribbon. Combs gave a report on the 100-mile yard sale held May 22 to 24. Several items were left over and it was decided to hold another sale with added items Aug. 28 to 29.

New McKendree UMW will host the Church Women United salad luncheon Sept. 5, and the District UMC Mission Sept. 13. Day Apart will be held June 21 in Piedmont, Missouri. This is New McKendree's spiritual retreat and those attending are to bring an old T-shirt for a project.

UMW Annual Meeting will be Sept. 26 and 27 at Community United Methodist Church in Columbia, Missouri. The chapter's Festival of Sharing items are to be turned in by Sept. 23. The district event will be Oct. 4 in Dexter, Missouri.

The Mary and Martha Circle was in charge of the program which was a report from those attending UMW Assembly in Louisville, Kentucky.

Refreshments were served by the Hope Circle.
