Cape Girardeau American Legion Auxiliary

The auxiliary met June 11 at Arena Park for its annual picnic. Three women veterans from the Missouri Veterans Home, Eleanora Brewton, Normandy Myers and Yvonne Sale, were special guests and were presented with gifts. This was a potluck meal with the auxiliary providing sloppy joe sandwiches and members providing covered dishes.

A donation was authorized for the July 3 fireworks display to be held for the residents of the veterans home.

The annual American Legion Post 63 July 4 picnic will be held at the legion hall. Brats, burgers and hot dogs will be grilled. Table service and drinks will be provided. Members are to bring salads, vegetables or desserts. Following the meal, bingo will be played with prizes provided by the auxiliary members. Members are asked to bring a pie, cake, homemade bread, bag of pecans, etc. Serving will begin at noon.

Six members traveled to New Madrid, Missouri. There they toured the Earthquake Museum, ate a sack lunch in the park, and toured the Hunter-Dawson home. Six additional members met them at Grecian Steak House for dinner, a short business meeting and secret pal gift exchange.

During the business meeting, Hahs reviewed the closing dates of registrations for scholarships. The scholarships available are from Cape County FCE, $300 to be awarded to a Cape County high school graduate; a district FCE scholarship; and MAFCE scholarship for an FCE member to attend the MAFCE state convention Oct. 1 to 3. Contact the county extension service in Jackson for more information.

At the closing, 11 members attended the opening night performance of "Nunsense" at River City Campus.
