The Town and Country FCE Club met June 12 at Grecian Steak House in Cape Girardeau to celebrate the club's 48th anniversary.
In honor of the anniversary, members exchanged secret pal greeting cards. Mary Klaproth and Joyce King were hostesses. King read a devotion titled, "Overcoming Temptation."
Minutes from the June meeting were read and approved, and the treasurer's report was read and approved.
Linda Thompson, president, thanked Lois Seabaugh for delivering "Books for Newborns" to SoutheastHEALTH. Seabaugh reported that she had also delivered the club donation to Relay for Life in memory of deceased club members.
Thompson reported she had attended the Cape Girardeau County FCE Council meeting June 2. A discussion was held regarding a fee charged to each member attending All Clubs Day for the noon meal. A vote to keep or remove this fee was taken. The vote resulted in a tie. Since there were not enough members present to break the tie, the matter was tabled until the fall council meeting.
During the business session, Thompson distributed a July calendar composed by Klaproth. Daily fines listed on the calendar will be used to benefit the club treasury. Fine money collected is to be turned in at the August meeting.
Applications for first time attendees at the MAFCE State Conference to be held at Osage Beach, Oct. 1 through 3 were distributed to eligible members.
Seabaugh made a motion to buy two fans to be donated to the Salvations Army, and was seconded by Sue Jones. The motion passed. Klaproth will be in charge of purchasing the fans. A delivery time will be announced at a later date.
The next meeting July 10 will be the annual picnic. Hostesses Seabaugh and Jones announced the picnic will be held at Pizza Inn in Fruitland at 6:30 p.m. Members are to bring bingo prizes to be donated to the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. A delivery date will be announced later.
Club Out will be held 6:30 p.m. Thursday at El Torero's in Jackson.
Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR
The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met May 28 at Cape Girardeau Country Club. Edna Ruth Fischer was hostess for the luncheon event.
The program, "Family History in Your Cells: Using DNA for Genealogical Research," was given by Charlotte Slinkard, Carolyn Webb and Ruth Lang. The concept of basic genetic genealogy through Autosomal DNA testing was explored as numerous lineage societies now accept limited DNA in addition to traditional paper documentation. In addition to genealogical relationships, test results can be compared with populations around the world to identify family origins.
Slinkard presented a special certificate to Patricia Baer Fuson Strom who has been a member of DAR 65 years. She was chapter regent from 1974 to1976 during the celebration of the Bicentennial of the United States.
Chaplain Dorothy Points administered the oath of office to the new officers for 2014 to 2016. They are: Charlotte Slinkard, regent; Carolyn Webb, vice regent; Kaye Hamblin, chaplain; Sue LaBruyere, recording secretary; Karen Ruth Lang, treasurer; Catherine Allison, registrar; Carol Cannon, historian; and LaFern Stiver, librarian.
A memorial service was conducted by the chaplain for Mary Lou Lett, who had been an active member of the chapter. Scarlett Puls gave the first remembrance to her mother, which was followed by memories from other members. A single red rose was presented to Puls in memory of her mother. Stiver reported that the book, "The Founders: Portraits of Persons Born Abroad Who Came to the Colonies in North America before 1701," by Charles Bolton, will be given to the Cape Girardeau Public Library in memory of Lett.
The group will recess for the summer. The next meeting will be Sept. 22.
Missouri Brigade
The Missouri Brigade of the Society of Descendents of Washington's Army at Valley Forge held its 30th annual meeting June 14 at The Gateworth in St. Louis. Ronald L. Beasley of Cape Girardeau serves as commander and he attended, along with his daughter, Elizabeth Beasley Herbst of St. Peters, Missouri.
Beasley presided over the business meeting, which followed a social hour and luncheon.
Following the meeting, Leon Lefler of Farmington, Missouri, presented a program on "Profiles of the American Revolutionary War Soldier."

Cape Girardeau County FCE
Cape Girardeau County FCE All Clubs Day was held March 24 at Cape Girardeau Extension Center in Jackson. Mariesa Lesch, vice president, presided over the meeting. Hostesses were the Cheerful Country Doers Club. There were 32 members and two guests in attendance.
Wyatt Berry, literacy essay contest winner, read his essay to members. There were 92 essays received from students from various schools.
The morning speaker was Deputy Cody Windbigler from the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department. He discussed "safety tips and all you want to know about law enforcement." He talked about security measures now being used by many schools called the ALICE program which trains personnel of the schools about alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. He also shared a video called "Run, hide, fight" which included information on how to use these techniques to defend yourself and others.
The afternoon program began with "High hopes for happiness and health," a light-hearted speech given by Kia Abernathy. She gave many tips on how to improve both our health and our lives by finding things to be happy about, improving our attitude and thinking positive, and activities we can use to become healthier.
Judie Herbst, Lee Anderson and Ruth Petzoldt presented membership certificates and pins to Karen Eakers, Lamplighters Club, five years; Barbara Marshall, Kage Club, 10 years; Inez Statler, Kage Club, 30 years; Jane Lungwitz and Agnes Wachter, Cheerful Country Doers, 40 years; JoAnn Hahs, Lamplighters Club, 50 years; Barbara Popp, Oak Ridge Homemakers, 55 years; and Cheerful Country Doers, 40 years.
Mary Gosche, human development specialist at the extension center, presented a slide show reviewing the 2013 Cape Girardeau County FCE Club work.
