Cape Girardeau County Extension Council
The Cape Girardeau County Extension Council met June 5 at the Cape County Extension office in Jackson for its quarterly meeting. Agnes Wachter, president, called the meeting to order.
Martha Slaten reported on the FCE spring district meeting held April 23 in Sedgewickville, Mo.
Darlene McCain from the tour committee reported 44 reservations were filled for the tour of The Hill in St. Louis on June 14. She also reported there were still some vacancies for the upcoming tours for The Muny on July 15, Stages for the Music Man on Sept. 27 and Christmas Concert with the St. Louis Symphony on Dec. 19.
McCain reported on the National Family & Community Education meeting scheduled for July 18 through 20 in Burlington, Vt. She will be presented the award of "Missouri Heart of FCE" at the meeting, if she is able to attend, as well as at the state FCE conference Oct. 2 and 3 in Cape Girardeau at Drury Inn. Plans for the conference are being worked on.
Joan Hahs presented ideas for Cape Girardeau County clubs to enter a trifold for the state meeting. She also reported the deadline for applying for the FCE scholarship is June 30.
Dortha Strack reported five clubs sent in reservations for space to enter a booth at the SEMO District Fair in September.
A motion was made and seconded to honor the National Day of the Family for 2009 and years to follow, that the county club committee will be in charge for the official signing of the proclamation and picture for publication in a local newspaper. Along with the committee, each club will be represented.
Oak Ridge Club will chair the county club's community project by helping the Jackson Elks Club with clothing for children in conjunction with Christmas baskets.
The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Cape Girardeau County Extension office.
American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary met at Cherry Hill in Capaha Park for a picnic June 11. A brief business meeting was held with Patsy Kimbrel presiding.
Edna Smith will invite the girls who will attend Missouri Girls' state and their mothers to the July meeting.
Iola Amelunke and Myrna Powers will attend the Legion's convention July 11 through 13 in Jefferson City, Mo.
Juanita Cook has been nominated for the Woman of the Year for the American Legion Auxiliary. The winner will be announced at the convention.
An immigration ceremony will be held July 11 at the Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr. U.S. Courthouse. Judge Stephen Limbaugh will preside, and the American Legion honor guard will post the colors. Members of the auxiliary were encouraged to attend the celebration. Each new citizen will be given a patriotic gift.
The post will have a fried chicken dinner July 29. Tickets can be purchased by calling a member. Desserts will be furnished by the auxiliary.
The annual Fourth of July picnic will be held at the two picnic shelters directly north of the Arena Building in Arena Park. The meat, drinks, paper products and utensils will be furnished. Those attending should be a covered dish and a lawn chair.
New McKendree UMW
The New McKendree United Methodist Women met June 3 in the church fellowship hall with 27 members present. Betty Henry, secretary, presided over the meeting.
Tandy Wendel, treasurer, gave her report, and it was accepted.
Edith Eggers, program resources, reported books checked out last meeting were back in the church library.
Willa Dean Propst, spiritual growth, led the group in a prayer of thanksgiving for the leaders and programs of New McKendree.
Penny Green, social action, reminded members of the June donations for the Susanna Wesley Center. She asked Shirley Patterson to explain the guidelines of the Mai Gray Charter for Racial Justice Club. Information was given to the circle chairwomen to be discussed with their members. A decision regarding club membership will be made at the September meeting.
Shirley Patterson, education and interpretation, reminded members of the School of Missions in July. Scholarships are available for participants.
Wilma Summers, mission ribbons, had ribbons and rosettes on display.
Naomi Hartle, membership pro tem, reminded all present to sign the register.
Circle attendance was as follows: Esther, three; Hope, 11; Mary & Martha, eight; Wesleyan, four; and members at large, three.
The mission ribbon was awarded to Hope Circle. First-time attendees Shari Elfrink, Penny DuPerier, and Sandy Hastings also received mission ribbons.
A thank-you was extended to Julie Combs for all her efforts with the yard sale. Patty Lynn gave a report on the sale. Donna McClard moved that the proceeds of $2,200 be designated for the World Service Fund apportionment. The motion was seconded by Wendel and passed.
Health kits and school kits for the Festival of Sharing should be brought to the October general meeting.
Hastings, speaking on behalf of her daughter, Brittany Hastings, director of vacation Bible school, asked the UMW to supply refreshments following the closing program Thursday. With an amended motion, Wilcoxson moved that four circles provide four dozen cookies each and one circle provide the punch. The motion was seconded by Patti Maevers and passed. Mary & Martha Circle volunteered to provide the punch and the other groups will bring the cookies.
June Engel announced she will be cooking for the Eat and Meet meal when it resumes in the fall in the fellowship hall. She indicated the need for additional cookware for the kitchen. Hastings moved that Engle purchase what is needed with the UMW paying for it. Lynn seconded the motion, and it passed.
Hope Circle presented the program given by Kara Whitledge, resource development specialist for the SEMO Network Against Sexual Violence.
The next meeting will be Sept. 2 in the church fellowship hall. Each member is to bring a salad. Esther Circle will coordinate the luncheon and present the program.
Cape Area CWU
The Cape Area Church Women United met June 7 at St. Mark Lutheran Church for a Bible study on the book of Ruth led by Helen Lohmeier.
Debra Tracy presided over the board meeting. The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved as corrected, and the treasurer's report was handed out to members.
Fifty women attended the dinner meeting for May Friendship Day at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on May 2. The program was "God's Wisdom Inspires Hospitality." Shirley Hutton served as hostess, and Barbara Swan was in charge of registration. Michelle Moon was program leader with Roberta Brown serving as song leader. Mary Morton, Doris Ford and Mary Fox were table leaders for groups discussing hospitality.
Ruth Schweer presented a scholarship to Marcy Abernathy, who is a nursing student at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. Donna Johnson, administrator of the Practical Nursing Program, also attended.
Carol Simon reported on the upcoming CROP Sale and Luncheon to be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 18 at Centenary United Methodist Church Family Life Center. She handed out fliers to be placed at churches and businesses. Items for the rummage sale are needed. Mike Metzger will again donate cinnamon rolls and dinner rolls. Extra help will be needed, and Simon asked members to recruit members from their churches. Sign-up sheets were passed out for members to bring food items for the luncheon. Preparations will be finalized for the luncheon from 1 to 4 p.m. July 17. Proceeds from the sale and luncheon will be used for the scholarship given to a young woman at the Career and Technology Center. Church World Service projects, FISH, Love Inc., the Jackson Food Pantry, Young Life and Family Resource Center.
Dolly Jewel reported some changes had been made to the Festival of Sharing items and handed out a sheet with the changes. A total of $2,346.30 was given by the local CWU to Festival of Sharing which included school kits, blankets, family food boxes and other items. The mini festival will be held in Dexter, Mo., on Oct. 11 and in Sedalia, Mo., on Oct. 18.
Members were reminded to continue saving box tops and labels. Adopt a leader notes will be written by Patterson.
The next meeting will be a Bible study and board meeting will be at First General Baptist Church.
Tilsit 4-H
The Tilsit 4-H Club met on June 5 at the Tilsit Fire Station. Kelly Crites called the meeting to order. There were 26 members and 17 others present. The club's Clover Kids also met.
Information on the county fair and county achievement day was announced. The club decided to participate in the benefit dance for the SEMO District Fair food stand improvements by preparing a game basket to auction off.
Hannah and Kristen Keesee and Chelsea Phillips gave a talk on horse grooming. Joshua Koenig spoke on how to take a good picture. Sara Gholson presented the digestive system of a pig. Hannah Aufdenberg gave a demonstration on horse breeds.
The next meeting was rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 10 at the fire station.
