Town & Country FCE
The Town & Country FCE Club met June 8 at Cedar Street Restaurant for its regular meeting and to celebrate its 40-year anniversary. Carolyn Thompson and Linda Thompson were in charge of arrangements. Each member was presented with a red rose and a booklet depicting the history of the club's 40 years.
The club was organized in June 1966 with five charter members: Betty Palmer, Dorothy Farrow, Ruth Tinnin, Sheila Boyer and Linda Thompson. Thompson is the only active charter member in the club.
The program was presented by Carolyn Thompson, reviewing the history of the club. A 40-year designed balloon and an anniversary cake was decoration for the event. Lois Seabaugh, president, presided over the meeting.
Thank-you notes were read from Parkview State School for the recent ice cream/cookie party and from Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center for a monetary donation. A report was given on the success of the club's food stand at the Poplar Bluff air Show. These proceeds will to be used for community projects.
A report was given on the County Council meeting held June 1. They discussed the possibility of organizing a countywide book club. It was suggested that the book club could meet before upcoming regular scheduled county council meetings.
The fall district meeting will be in Perry County, tentatively set for late October. Also, the state meeting will be held in Columbia, Mo., Oct. 19 and 20.
The National FCE meeting will be July 21 through 23 in Nashville, Tenn., with Seabaugh, Mary Klaproth and Linda Thompson having registered to attend.
Two fans will be donated to the Fan Club at the Salvation Army. These will be delivered on June 22, and then the group will go to Red Lobster for "club out."
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on July 13 at Cape County Park pavilion 20 for the annual family picnic. Sue Jones and Inez Knott will be chairwomen. The meat will be provided by the club, and members are to bring covered dishes, table service and drinks.
The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its monthly membership meeting on June 6 at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
Cindy Schmoll from the Horizon Enrichment Center was the guest speaker. She reported that the center is for adults with learning disabilities and their activities include music, speech therapy and fitness programs.
Diane Sides and Cheryl Wormington were welcomed as new members.
New business items were conducted including the approval of the 2006-2007 service budget.
Other business included an update on the upcoming Women of Achievement luncheon in the fall, and Kathy Swan gave a review of the Zonta International Convention by-law change proposals.
Maria Childress, president, held committee sign-ups for the club year of 2006-2007.
A correction was noted for the May meeting during which Mary Scherer received an award for 30 years of continuous service.
The Wonderworkers FCE Extension Club met on June 8 at the home of Margie W. Reisenbichler.
Dorothy Lichtenegger and Reisenbichler gave a report on the county FCE Extension meeting that was held on June 1 at the County Extension Office in Jackson. Reports given were the SEMO District Fair booth, the Red Cross blood drive held June 14, the organizing of a book club and the application of grants for the clubs.
Nell Kieninger was presented a 20-year pin and certificate for her membership and work in the FCE Extension.
Joy Engelhart volunteered to help with organizing the book club. June Landgraf and Engelhart gave the program on "the outrageous woman."
The next meeting will be an outing on July 13 to tour an organic garden and a lunch at the Bayou.
The Capaha Scottich Rite Women's Club met June 12 at Frontier Restaurant in Fruitland with 13 members and three visitors present. Luella Armstrong presided over the meeting.
The installation of officers was conducted by Laura Corse. The officers are: Armstrong, president; Cynthia Alfaro, vice president; Debbie Hay, secretary and historian; Doris Hurst, treasurer; and Omega Hawkins, chaplain.
The next meeting will be held July 10 at Frontier Restaurant. The hostess will be Ramona Bellis and program chairman will be Irene Tindall. Bingo will be played during the social hour.
The Cape Girardeau County Charter of AARP 4041 met June 5 with 34 members present.
The program, "Safe Driving Tips and When You Are Not Safe," was presented by Bob Harper, driving instructor.
The District 8 AARP Roundtable meeting on May 22 was a success.
There will be a safe driving course offered on Aug. 7 and 9.
The next meeting will be July 3.
