American Legion Auxiliary

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary met June 8 for the annual wiener roast. Marilyn Ritter, chaplain, offered a prayer before the meal.

Betty Cato, vice president, called the meeting to order. The treasurer's report and minutes were read and approved. Correspondence included two thank-you notes in appreciation for the May meeting that honored Gold Star mothers and members and women veterans. A thank-you note was received from the children at the "Just Say No to Drugs" at Jefferson Elementary School. The St. Louis Alzheimer's Association sent a thank-you note for a memorial sent in memory of Leo Wulfers and a thank-you note of appreciation was received from the John Schwab family.

A motion was made to give $75 to each delegate attending the state convention. Motion was made by Myrna Powers and seconded by Frieda Howard. The motion carried. Delegates will be Peggy Blaylock, Iola Amelunke and Barbara Yallaly.

Blaylock, Americanism chairwoman, and Ritter, education chairwoman, announced 105 students from Notre Dame Regional High School entered the 2005 Americanism Essay Contest. This year's essay contest theme was "My Letter to a Person in the Armed Forces." Certificates of appreciation were taken to each student and to the teacher. The winners will be announced at the convention in July.

Several get-well cards and sympathy cards were mailed by Vergie Templeton, sunshine chairwoman.

Girls who will attend Missouri Girls' State will be sent a letter inviting them to come to the July meeting to share events from their experience. Caryn Michel, president, has been Girls' State chairwoman for the past several years. Co-chairwomen for 2006 will be Edna Smith and Cato.

The slate of officers for 2005-2006 were accepted. They are Michel, president; Cato, vice president; Yallaly, secretary; Powers, treasurer; Ritter, chaplain; Dorothy Klein, historian; and Muriel Day, sergeant at arms.

The next meeting will be held July 13.

High-Noon Toastmasters Club

The High-Noon Toastmasters club met May 31 to elect officers for the term from July 1, 2005, through June 30, 2006. They are Bill Meyer, president; Joan Masters, vice president education; Gene Loftis, vice president, membership; Terry Major, vice president, public relations; Russ Kullberg, secretary/treasurer; and David Ross, sergeant-at-arms.

The club meets each Tuesday from 12:10 to 1 p.m. at Church of Christ annex, 328 S. West End Blvd. For more information, call Meyer at 334-3130.

Hobbs Chapel UMW

The Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Women met at the church on June 7. The meeting was called to order by Chris Simmons, president.

Plans were made for the UMW Sunday, which will be July 10. Mission ribbons and special awards will be presented during the meeting. A celebration of candle burning will take place. Contributions will be made in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special person. $34.68 is needed to burn the candle for one minute to support worldwide missions of the United Methodist Church.

A decision was reached to establish a Memorial Garden on the church property. A plan will be obtained from a local nursery. One rose bush has been planted in memory of Oma Brooks, and a second one will be planted in memory of Rosemary Whittard.

A vote was taken to donate $250 to the heifer project through the youth's ark program.

The next meeting will be on July 5 at a local restaurant. The Oma Brooks circle will be invited to participate.

June Warder presented the program on prayer.

Roberts Homemakers

The Roberts Homemakers Club met June 8 at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. Gloria Hanners had the devotion.

The July 13 meeting will be held at the library after lunch at Skinny's Diner in Jackson.

Kage FCE

The Kage FCE Club met June 9 at the home of Judie Herbst. Two members from Young Americans 4-H Club gave demonstrations. Leslie Birk explained the six main areas of confirmation to be considered when buying a horse, and Claire Illers explained key points in decorating a home.

A report was given on the recent FCE Council meeting and attention was called to a legislative meeting open to the public at 7 p.m. June 28 in the lower meeting room of the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.

Dortha Strack, president, reported that 29 children attended the Clover Kids Camp on June 5. Some of the club members will assist with the Diabetes Camp to be held for children with diabetes on Aug. 4. Edna Hey distributed certificates to those participating in the Fan Mail for the Troops Campaign for Christmas of 2004.

Strack gave the program on edible wild plants.

The next meeting will be hosted by Linda Farrow. There will be four 4-H demonstrations given and the club will hear a program on "Something just for me" by Barbara Marshall.

Town & Country FCE

Town & Country FCE Club met at Cedar Street in Cape Girardeau on June 9 for a joint club 39th anniversary event and members' wedding anniversaries. Secret pal gifts were exchanged. Arrangements were handled by Judy Johnson and Darlene McCain.

Shirley Heise presided over the business session. Lois Seabaugh and McCain gave highlights of the County FCE Council meeting, which was held June 2.

It was noted the Red Cross Blood Drive will be held Wednesday with McCain planning to work. The guidelines for the FCE County scholarship have been changed and a special meeting will be called to discuss All Club's Day and the recognition of the club of the year. Johnson gave highlights of the National FCE Conference which she attended in Anchorage, Alaska, in May.

A thank-you note was recieved from the Parkview State School for the end-of-school party. It was voted to donate two fans to the Salvation Army. Norma Schrieber announced she was the recipient of the Southeast District Scholarship to attend the annual FCE conference in Columbia, Mo., on Aug. 25 and 26.

Mary Klaproth announced she has won a free state membership for 2006 for collecting the most pledges for the "Tune Out Violence" campaign. She also announced the Children and TV Family Life notebook she submitted for Cape Girardeau County received second place in the state competition. The SEMO District Fair booth was discussed with plans to be finalized at a later date.

The club finalized their items for the take-home tote bags to be given away at the banquet at the annual FCE conference in Columbia.

Members brought items for the Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.

Club Out will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Chinatown Buffet in Cape Girardeau.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. July 14. This will be a family picnic and will be held at Cape County Park South. Margie McAnally, Carolyn Thompson and Linda Thompson will be in charge of arrangements.

St. Vincent CCW

The St. Vincent de Paul Council of Catholic Women met in May for a potluck dinner and meeting.

New officers were installed by Father Charles Prost C.M. They are, Alician Loos, president; Carol Drummond, vice president; Shirley Cracraft, secretary; and Pat Harrison, treasurer.

Ann Cantoni reported the the council collected 178 pairs of shoes ad 90 paints of socks for "Shoes for Orphans."

Pennies for Peru were collected for the people in Peru to operate their hospitals.

It was announced that a member of the council, Joan Eggimann, was installed as Dioceasan president at the Spring Assembly in Springfield, Mo.
