Cape County FCE
The Cape Girardeau County FCE Council meeting was held June 5 at the new Cape Girardeau County Education Center in Jackson. President Ruth Pohlman presided.
Mary Gosche, human development specialist, reported that the leader training program was a success. Forty FCE members attended the session. A program on "Dining with Diabetics" will be held soon.
The book "Sharing Rich Lives through FCE" is being donated to the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. It has the history of Missouri Association for Family and Community Education from the years 1900 through 2002 and was written by FCE members.
Marjorie Swan reported that the tour to the Kentucky Opry in Draffenville, Ky., for the Brascher Music Show was a success. Reservations are being taken for a trip to see "South Pacific" at The Muny in St. Louis on Aug. 5. Reservations of $67 will include transportation, admission to the show and dinner at Bevo Mill. The seats are located in Terrace A, and deadline for reservations is July 22. Checks are to be sent and made payable to Opal Collins.
Several awards will be presented to Cape County FCE Clubs at the state conference in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 5. Award winners are: Mary Klaproth, Missouri Heart of FCE award; Pohlman of Cheerful Country Doers, third place in marketing and membership; Klaproth of Town & Country, second place in literacy; Linda Thompson of Town & Country, second place in international; Dortha Strack and Inez Statler of Kage, first place in public policy and health, and third place in community success; and Marilyn Retherford of Oak Ridge, second place in literacy. Darlene McCain got a scholarship to attend the FCE State Conference in September.
The county council will be sending president Pohlman, president-elect Nelda Crader and Shirley Cracraft to represent Cape County at the state conference.
Four clubs will prepare a booth for the SEMO District Fair in September.
The County FCE will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. on June 25, at Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
FCE scholarship applications are due by Oct. 9.
The next council meeting will be Aug. 28.
Friendship Club
The Friendship Club met June 10 at the home of Elsie Gerecke.
Beverly Banks gave an interesting program on the customs and teachings of faiths and explained Passover symbols.
VFW Ladies Auxiliary
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary met June 12 at Post 3838 with Debbie Griffin presiding.
All committee reports were read. If any members have items for the Cancer Booth at the Convention, June 26 to 29, they may be left at the post or contact Debbie or Glennetta.
The district meeting will be held at the Charleston, Mo., Post on Aug. 17.
The next steak night will be Aug. 2.
The next meeting at the post will be at 6:30 p.m. July 10. A memorial service will be held at that time.
The 2004 membership has begun.
Kage FCE
The Kage FCE Club met at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center on June 12. Margaret Crites was hostess.
President Dortha Strack conducted the business meeting. Three members reported having gotten replies from servicemen who received greetings through the military mail. The club was recognized as first in the nation for its Christmas mailing to the military and also for Valentines sent. Several members also received certificates for sending 50 or more Christmas greetings each.
Inez Statler reported that 1,035 Golden Books will have been given by the club to the children's clinic at the Cape Girardeau County Health Department from May 2000, to August 2003. In addition, ten books were given for newborns to both Cape Girardeau hospitals in recognition of National FCE "Day of the Family" on May 15.
A program on hormone replacement therapy was given by Barbara Schaffner.
Jobyna Daume will be host of the July 10 meeting. Verna Vogel will present the program.
GFWC Quest Club
The last meeting of the GFWC Quest Club was held June 11. A luncheon was held at Chateau Girardeau. Hostesses were Allene Mowery and Irma Hill.
Ann and John Shelton and Celeste and John Obermiller presented a musical program. Barbara Popp spoke on "Happiness in Memories" and thanked members of the club who were instrumental in the organization of Scope Club in 1957. She reminded Quest Club that they were the "mother" of Scope Club. The Quest Club was organized in 1935 and admitted to General Federation in 1947.
Guests were Cathi Cleland of Covington, La., Betsy Schultz of Columbus, Ga., and Ann Hudson of the Scope Club.
New Salem UMW
The New Salem UMW of New Salem United Methodist Church held its regular meeting on June 4 in the Fellowship Hall. The meeting was preceded with a pizza party and ice cream cake for members' birthdays during the year.
Verla Mangels, Roberta Seabaugh and Jackie Kurre reported on attending the spring meeting. It was reported that 58 people attended the mother-daughter banquet.
