St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met May 19 in the Huels Room.

Monsignor Richard Rolwing and Monsignor Bill Stanton were guests as the council celebrated May birthdays. Refreshments included strawberry shortcake.

Those in attendance were Kate Schaefer, president; Mary Hennecke, vice president; Pat Eftink, treasurer; Imelda Nenninger, secretary; and Judy DeClue, past president.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Thank-you notes were read from the Charles Farrar, Jim Blattel, Jason Hunter and Dr. John Schoenberger families for serving bereavement dinners. Also, Sister Rita Schonhoff sent thanks for the donations for her outreach work.

Commission reports were given.

Spiritual commission: Sister Lucille Zerr received a donation from the Bauer family for the food pantry. Those who attended the meeting brought canned vegetables.

Organization commission: DeClue will continue with plans for the scrapbooking fundraiser.

Dolores Gibbar reported three bereavement dinners were served.

Mary Buxton is the new April Circle leader.

Diane Schaefer thanked the group for the opportunity to attend the spring assembly. She reported about the workshop on welcoming strangers to the community.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Cape Girardeau Area CWU

May Friendship Day was celebrated by Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United May 6, at Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. There were 33 women in attendance. The blessing was given by the Rev. Barron Willer, pastor. Kim Willer was pianist for the evening.

The program was opened by Shirley Hutton introducing Kristen Woods, who was the recipient of a $500 scholarship to the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. Woods was accompanied by her daughter. Journie Ryan, and Donna Johnson, who is the practical nursing director at the center.

"Living Our Friendship, Passing on the Key" was the title of the worship program, in which women looked at issues of the day and celebrate friendships and sisterhood together. Louise Duncan and Dorothy Sheard began with a Scriptural reading. A skit was then performed that included Duncan and Sheard, Joyce Zschille, Regina Frawick, Geneva Allen and Jonell McNeely. Duncan also recounted her story of growing up in the Cape Girardeau area. Martha Sanderson explained how the Fellowship of the Least Coin began and continues as members show others they care in the smallest of ways. An offering was taken up, and keys were handed out as reminders of Psalm 90:1-3.

Longtime member Vera Koen was awarded the CWU Valiant Woman Award. Koen spends many hours volunteering with the organization, as well as at Saint Francis Medical Center and the Salvation Army. The meeting closed with prayer.

The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met June 3 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. "An Instrument of Courage" was the daily discipleship that was the basis for the Bible study led by Helen Lohmeier.

Shirley Patterson opened the meeting. There were 10 members present. Helen Ueleke led all in prayer. Minutes were read and approved. Martha Sanderson sent copies of the treasurer's report. Fellowship of the Least Coin was collected.

The upcoming CROP Sale and Luncheon was discussed, and sign-up sheets for workers and food items were passed around. Also, board members were asked to donate loaves of sweet bread for the tables. Help is needed to set up the day before, as well as on the actual day.

There was a discussion on the Human Rights Award. Nominations need to be turned in at the August board meeting. The award will be presented at the November World Community Day.

The CROP Sale and Luncheon will be July 15, and the next Bible study and board meeting will be Aug. 5 at old St. Vincent's Fuerth House.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met June 7 in the church fellowship hall. Mary Klaproth, president, led members in reciting the UMW Purpose.

The minutes were read by Gale King, secretary, and Marilyn Fronabarger reviewed the treasurer's report. They were approved as read.

Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources, announced that the Response magazine was still available for those who would like to borrow it.

Penny Green, social action chairwoman, reported that the next project will be to work on the Festival of Sharing Kits to be delivered in October. The kits give children in impoverished schools and refugee camps some basic tools for learning. The festival will be held on Oct. 1 in Dexter, Mo.

Shirley Patterson announced that the Church Women United 42nd annual CROP celebration will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Klaproth reminded the group that the Mini School of Missions will be at Sikeston, Mo., on Aug. 27. Deadline for registration is Aug. 20. Also, the UMW Annual meeting is Sept. 24 in Blue Springs, Mo. Deadline for that registration is Sept. 1.

Mary and Martha Circle won the attendance Mission Ribbon with 15 members present.

Doris Dace moved that Amy Cook be reimbursed $30 for mission ribbons she had purchased. Laura Jo Smith seconded, and the motion was approved.

Laura Jo Smith thanked those who helped with the bereavement dinner served for the family of Blake Jones. Sue Ann Smith, Penny Green, Lisa Friedrich and Sue Jones baked cakes and June Engel, Betty Henry, Ruth Barks, Sue Jones, Kim Martin and Laura Jo Smith helped in the kitchen.

Those who helped with the bereavement dinner served for the family of Geraldine Stroder were: June Engel, Laura Jo Smith, Millie Rose, Klaproth, and Elwanda Corbin.

Engel announced that she will not be cooking dinners for the church any more. She will, however, still prepare bereavement dinners.

Klaproth announced that on UMW Sunday, Don and Marilyn Conrad were presented a special mission pin for their exemplary service to New McKendree Church.

Ruth Piper of Perryville, Mo., was a guest. Donna Mason was a first-time member.

A report of the 100 Mile Yard Sale was read. A profit of $3,706 was reported. Special thanks were given to all those who made the sale such a success, especially Julie Combs, who was the organizer.

Mary and Martha Circle gave the program, and the Hope Circle served refreshments.

The next meeting will be a salad luncheon at 10 a.m. Sept. 6. The meeting closed with a reading from the Prayer Calendar.

Chateau Girardeau Garden Club

The Chateau Girardeau Garden Club had their organizational meeting on May 18 and announced programs for 2011.

Junee 15: Denise Timble will present a hands-on demonstration of propagation at the Charles Hutson Horticulture Greenhouse. She will provide cuttings for everyone.

July 20: Carolyn Huter, volunteer at the Conservation Campus Nature Center, will present a program on butterfly gardens.

Aug. 17: Margaret Honey Baker will present a program on bird feeders and building a birdhouse.

Sept. 21: Beth Preston, The Plant Lady, will present a program on balcony and patio flowerpots and plants.

Oct. 19: The group will visit the Conservation Campus Nature Center for a walk and program on Missouri native grasses and plants.
