The Southeast District Spring FCE meeting was held April 22 at First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo., hosted by Butler County FCE members. The theme was "Seeds for the Future."

District director, JoAnn Hahs, opened the meeting. She shared information regarding upcoming events for FCE. Butler County FCE President, Shirley Kirkley, welcomed members on behalf of Butler County. Verla Mangels, member of Lamplighters Club, led the group in singing the Club Collect. Hahs introduced present and past members of the MAFCE Board.

Ripley County had the thought of the day, "Old Age Wisdom."

Lois Fritsche, Perry County FCE president, was in charge of roll call. There were 11 members present from Cape Girardeau County with other members from Butler, Perry and Ripley counties attending, for a total of 33 persons including a guest, Phyllis Flanigan, University of Missouri human development specialist.

The morning program was presented by Mary Martens, MAFCE president, on the topic of the ACWW Triennial meeting she attended in Chennai, India. She presented a powerpoint presentation with photos. She also showed various items she had purchased in India.

Kage Club was presented a 70-year membership certificate and Farrar Club was presented a 50-year membership certificate.

Wyatt Berry, Southeast District winner in the 4th grade Essay and Artwork Contest, read his essay on responsibility. He was presented a certificate and gift card to Walmart. He was accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Berry of Oak Ridge.

The afternoon program on gardening was presented by Sarah Denkler, University of Missouri horticulture specialist.

Flanigan spoke briefly on the various ages of women.

Cape Girardeau County was in charge of the silent auction with $165 raised. Members were given the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a quilt, which will be given away at the MAFCE Annual Conference to be held Oct. 1-3 at the Inn of Grand Glaize in Osage Beach, Mo.

An election of a Southeast District director will take place at the Fall District Meeting, which will be hosted by Bollinger County members. The Spring District meeting will be hosted by Cape Girardeau County in 2015.

At the conclusion of the meeting, door prizes were donated by the counties attending and handed out by Butler County.

Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR

On April 23 the Nancy Hunter Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, met at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Charlotte Slinkard, regent, opened the meeting with the DAR Ritual, the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States and the American's Creed.

The program about the founder of Cape Girardeau, "Louis Lorimier's Life and Journals," was presented by author and historian, Linda Nash.

The National Defense Message, "The Mission of NRO Satellites" was given by chairman LaFern Stiver. The National Reconnaissance Office, headquartered in Fairfax County, Va., is part of the Department of Defense. It designs, builds and operates the space reconnaissance systems of the United States government by working closely with its intelligence and space partners.

Registrar Catherine Allison reported the chapter has three new member applications pending for verification in Washington, D.C.

The following new officers were elected. Charlotte Slinkard, regent; Carolyn Webb, vice regent; Kaye Hamblin, chaplain; Sue Labruyere, recording secretary; Karen Ruth Lang, treasurer; Allison, registrar; Carol Cannon, historian; and Stiver, librarian.

Margaret Ford and Nash were guests of the chapter. The next meeting, a luncheon, will be May 28 at Cape Girardeau Country Club.
