Oak Ridge FCE
The Oak Ridge FCE Club met at the Jackson Elks Lodge for its May meeting with Jean Rehak serving as hostess. There were 11 members present. Betty Dellinger gave the devotional, "A Little Prayer."
Members learned from Marilyn Retherford that she had purchased the book "God Gave Me You" to present to the Riverside Regional Library in honor of National Day of the Family. A book drive for presentations to libraries netted 422 books. Rehak spearheaded the drive.
Byrd presented the book of achievement she prepared for the club to be judged in contest with other clubs in the county on what the group chose as its most successful project. The book won third place and members congratulated Byrd for her work.
Rehak explained ideas for the SEMO District Fair booth.
Barbara Popp celebrated her 50th anniversary May 27.
An invitation to the Jackson Manor Appreciation Night was read, and Byrd volunteered to present the club.
A report on adopted families was given, and Ruby Hitt and Mary Dee Ford replied their families had been happy that Jack Rehak had visited and offered his gardening assistance.
Plans were made to attend the Cape Girardeau County Council meeting June 7 and to have the international meal at the June 19 meeting at the Byrd home. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Hitt presented information about a benefit to be held June 9 in Oak Ridge, and the club agreed to participate with items for the country store and in other ways.
Nelda Crader, Jackie Retherford, Byrd and Dellinger will serve refreshments Tuesday at the Jackson Manor birthday party.
Capaha Scottish Rite Women
The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met at Delmonico's restaurant in Jackson for its May meeting. There were nine members and five guests present. Luella Armstrong presided over the meeting.
The nominating committee presented a slate of officers, which will be installed by Mary Mouser during the June 11 meeting.
Dennis and Barbara Hurst gave a program about their mission trip to Louisiana to help in building a church that was ruined during a storm.
The hostess gifts were won by Dennis Hurst and Mouser. Irene Tindall won the Mother's Day gift.
Hostesses for the June meeting will be Omega Hawkins, Juanita Holder and Donna Delay at Delmonico's restaurant.
Cape Girardeau AARP 4041
The Cape Girardeau County chapter of AARP 4041 met in May at the Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Center at North Cape County Park with 26 members present.
Steve Juhlin of the nature center showed a film about Southeast Missouri and members toured the nature center or walked on a trail.
The next meeting will be held Monday.
St. Mary CCW
The St. Mary Cathedral Council of Catholic Women met May 17 in the Monsignor Huels room. Dolores Pobst, church commission, led the opening prayers and the rosary. Julia Grider, vice president, crowned the statue of Mary.
Pat Eftink distributed copies of the treasurer's report.
The council will serve the reception following the ordination to the priesthood of William Hennecke Jr. on Friday.
A birthday cake was presented to Sister Lucille Zerr and a donation made to the Catholic Food Pantry in her honor.
There were four bereavement dinners served since March 24.
Reports on the spring assembly were given by Connie Essner, Imelda Nenninger, Pobst and Grider. Cape Girardeau will host the spring assembly April 18 and 19, 2008. This will be the 50th year of CCW in the diocese.
Ladies volunteered to serve desserts and make coffee, tea, etc., at the parish picnic Sunday.
The next meeting will be June 21 in the Monsignor Huels room.
Nancy Hunter NSDAR
The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met May 23 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club with a luncheon and short business meeting with Edna Ruth Fischer as hostess. There were 13 members and three guests present. Mary Lou Hill, Southeast District director, was a guest as well as Freda Blakemore and Shelia Holloway, Surgeons Veterans Service information officer, Department of Missouri Health. She spoke of her job as manager.
Special mention was given to Katherine Lamkin, who has been a member of Nancy Hunter Chapter for 53 years.
Dorothy Points, regent, led the group in the rituals and had a program on the 105th anniversary of the chapter. She gave thanks to the officers who will hold office until 2008. They are Points, regent; Carolyn Geittmann, vice regent; Lois Spalding, chaplain; Catherine Allison, recording secretary; Ruth Lang, treasurer; and Mary Lou Lett, register.
Hill reported the Southeast Missouri District meeting will be held Sept. 20 at First United Methodist Church in Sikeston, Mo.
The chapter will be on its summer break until September.
Historical Association
The Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau held its yearly meeting May 20 at Francine's Gardens.
The following officers were elected: Donna Grantham, president; Marcie Sullivan, vice president; Marge Janssen, secretary; Leland Shivelbine, treasurer; and Barbara Port, corresponding secretary.
The following board members were re-elected: Grace Hoover, Mary Russell Fox and Dan Cotner.
The promotions committee consisting of Tim Blattner and Grantham reported cooperative venture with Debbie Erlbacher of Francine's Gardens to encourage weddings, meetings and social engagements to be held on the Glenn House grounds and Carriage House.
Bill Port introduced Dr. Frank Nickell, chairman of the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Regional History, who provided a lecture on famous Cape Gir-ardeans.
