American Legion Auxiliary 63

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 met May 11 with 19 members and one guest in attendance. Gladys Lawrence and Vergie Templeton served as hostesses.

A memorial service was conducted for three deceased members, Jewell Lincecum, Marilyn Ritter and Imogene Yallaly. As their names were read, a white peony was placed in a vase, with a prayer by chaplain Cathryn Allison, followed by a tape of "God Rest High on That Mountain."

Myrna Powers, Poppy Day chairman, reported $2,212.50 in donations from Poppy Day on May 6. Donations are still being received, and the final amount will be given at the next meeting.

Peggy Blaylock made a motion to purchase a new American flag for the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. The motion was seconded by Freida Howard and passed.

Linda Kern, membership chairwoman, reported the auxiliary achieved its goal of 162 members.

The June 8 meeting will be the annual picnic held at shelter No. 1 in Kiwanis Park, off Perryville Road and across from Bethel Assembly Church of God. Fried chicken will be provided and members are to bring a covered dish. Lunch will be served at noon.

Town and Country FCE Club

The Town and Country FCE Club met May 12 at Hill Top Creations in New Hamburg, Mo., for a dinner meeting, hosted by Lois Seabaugh. Seabaugh gave the devotional titled "Somebody's Mother," taken from Caroline Kennedy's book "The Walk in Beauty." Darlene McCain provided a game, "New High School Exit Exam." Coins for Friendship was collected, and roll call was answered by each naming their calcium intake.

McCain, president, presided over the business meeting. Thank-you notes were received from Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center for providing Easter treat bags and from the Jackson Ministerial Alliance for food pantry donations. A letter was received from Liz Fish, MAFCE Southeast District director, reporting on the recent spring district meeting in Sedgewickville, as well as announcing her official resignation from office effective May 1.

Arrangements were finalized for providing refreshments at Parkview State School May 31, for an end of school party. Items were brought for Women's Safe House to be delivered May 18. Donations for helping "Stuff a Truck" for flood victims were brought and were delivered at Beef O'Brady's on Tuesday. Two fans will be purchased for the Salvation Army to be delivered June 10. Members were reminded of the scheduled council meeting at 7 p.m. June 2 at the Jackson Extension Center.

Sue Jones and Mary Klaproth will attend the National FCE Conference in celebration of the FCE Diamond Jubilee from July 14 through 17 in Denver. Klaproth received notification the Cape Girardeau County FCE International report she prepared has received first place and the award will be presented at the annual MAFCE conference in Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 29.

Program was given by Linda Thompson on calcium and vitamin D, and she was assisted by all members giving a program from Hearth Fire Series No. 35 on "Here's to a Healthy Heart" and Hearth Fire Series No. 13-A, "Here's to Your Health."

The club's June 9 at meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at Pagoda Gardens in Cape Girardeau. It which will include its anniversary celebration. Members will remember their secret pal with an anniversary gift.

Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Hickory House in Jackson.

Oak Ridge FCE Club

Oak Ridge FCE president Jean Rehak was hostess for the May 17 meeting.

A Memorial Day tribute was given to all U.S. service people, present and past, with a poem "The Ultimate Sacrifice" by Joanna Fuchs, was given by Barbara Barks.

Minutes were read and approved by Nelda Crader for April's monthly meeting.

Billie Criddle, treasurer, gave a report on the profits of the yearly garage sale held May 5 and 6. Rehak thanked all members who devoted their time and items to make the sale a great success. Money made from the garage sale will be used to buy items for children -- socks, caps, underwear and gloves -- for the December giveaway with Jackson Elks, Jackson police and fire departments.

It was announced that Cape Girardeau County Commissioner Paul Koeper signed a proclamation declaring May 15 as National FCE Day of the Family.

Coins for Friendship were collected and given to Lee Anderson who is in charge of this program from all members.

On May 11 members of Cape Girardeau County FCE met at the Missouri Extension Office in Jackson to work on autism items. Betty Dellinger, Sharon Ervin, Rehak, and Barks from Oak Ridge FCE attended and helped make 13 blankets, seven neck snakes and seven lap pads which were delivered to the autism center in Cape Girardeau. June 13 will be the last work day for this summer.

The FCE quarterly council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 2 at Jackson Extension Center.

"Stay Strong, Stay Healthy" was Mary Dee Ford's program for May. Ford gave several statistics about our exercise and eating habits within our daily lives. Material from Hearth Fire Series No. 8-A, #27 Show me the Power of Healing Foods and No. 13 Women to Women Bone Breaking Facts, all were very informative.

Members from Oak Ridge FCE club will be helping with Missouri Veterans Home bingo May 29. Barks, Dellinger and Rehak plan to attend.

It was announced that Oct. 22, Oak Ridge FCE Club will be celebrating its 95th year and plans are underway for a special time and date to announce later.

Announcement was made with regards to the district director, Liz Fish, who is stepping down from her position. Joann Hahs from Lamplighters FCE Club will be taking her position.

It was also noted Oak Ridge FCE families donated items for flood victims in Southeast Missouri. Also items were taken to a family in Jackson in which the club adopted to help with items needed for daily use.

Southeast District FCE spring meeting

The Southeast District FCE meeting was held on April 26 hosted by Bollinger County FCE at the Sedgewickville United Methodist Church. The theme of the meeting was "75 and Staying Alive." There were 51 people in attendance, including Nancy Richmond, MAFCE president, Mary Marten, MAFCE president-elect, Liz Fish, Southeast District director, and Mary Gosche, FCE consultant. There were 19 in attendance from Cape Girardeau County. In addition, the three essay winners and their parents were present. The winners read their essays on caring. Bailey Beussink from Cape Girardeau County received first place; Grace Brewer from Perry County received second place; and Taylar Grimes from Wayne County received third place. Each received a Walmart gift card for $25. Beussink also received a second-place certificate and a check of $75 from the state of Missouri.

Years-of-membership certificates were presented to Ford of the Oak Ridge FCE Club for 65 years, three from Perry County, Marie Katt for 55 years, and Dorothy Hemman and Tilley Luckey for 50 years, and one from Wayne County for 25 years.

Lunch was catered by Sedgewicville Variety Store.

An auction was held, and Judy Wilfong, FCE member from Bollinger County, was the auctioneer. The amount that was collected $347.

The six counties brought centerpieces for the tables, which were later given as door prizes.

JoAnn Hahs, Cape Girardeau County member of the Lamplighters FCE Club, was elected to serve as Southeast District director with her term beginning for the fall district meeting and ending in 2014.

The fall district meeting will be hosted by Butler County in October of this year. The state meeting will be Sept. 28 through 30 in Springfield, Mo.

John Guild Chapter NSDAR

When the John Guild Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met in April, the hostesses, Geraldine Crites and Jan Chamberlain, provided a theme in honor of the royal wedding. The refreshment table was displayed with wedding and British decorations. The cupcakes were topped with pictures of William and Catherine that had been ordered from London.

Laura Ruth Daugherty was approved for membership by transfer, and Julie Robinson was approved for membership.

Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club

The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met May 9 at Delmonico's in Jackson. The meeting was dedicated to mothers with reading and gifts.

The next meeting will be on June 13 and will be the installation of officers for the 2011-2012 year. They are: Luella Armstrong, president; Doris Hurst, vice president; Norma Yost, secretary; and Mary Mouser, treasurer.
