District FCE
Mary Gosche, human development specialist of Cape Girardeau County, and 15 Family and Community Education members attended the Spring District FCE meeting on May 2 at First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
The theme of the meeting was "Hidden Treasures." Carolyn Malson, Butler County president, gave the welcome. Pledges were lead by Ripley County FCE.
Introductions were made by Marilyn Edwards, Southeast Missouri District director.
Betty Schalk, state president, presented the program, "Sharing Rich Lives Through FCE" history book. The 248-page book contains an official history of Missouri Association for Family and Community Education Inc., from 1900 to 2002. Memories were written by FCE members through those years.
Those who have been members for 25, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70 years were honored.
Maude Harris, home economist, gave a program on "Dining with Diabetes." A diabetic dessert was prepared using an angel food cake, lemon sugar-free instant pudding, skim milk, lemon-flavored fat-free no-sugar-added yogurt, and light whipped topping.
Fourth-grade essay winners on the topic "What A Family Means to Me" were recognized and prizes awarded. Taylor Thompson, of Cape Girardeau County, won first place in the district and second place in the state of Missouri. Darby Provance of Poplar Bluff won second place in the district, and Ryan Ferrell of Doniphan won third place in the district.
An auction was conducted by Betty Murdock, state treasurer. A name-tag drawing was held and door prizes awarded.
The fall district meeting will be held in Perry County.
Capaha Scottish Rite
The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met May 12 at the Country Kettle in Biehle, Mo. Eleven members and four visitors were present.
Luella Armstrong, president, presided. Omega Hawkins gave the table prayer.
The nominating committee report was accepted. Officers to be installed in June are: Armstrong, president; Cynthia Alfaro, vice president; Debbie Hay, secretary; and Doris Hurst, treasurer.
Alfaro and son, Billy, demonstrated the art of self- defense for women. They also did a comedy skit, "They Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens." Marsha Plunkett read "God Bless America," "A Mother's Love," and "When I'm an Old Lady."
The June meeting and installation of officers will be held June 9 at Delmonico's in Jackson.
Town & Country FCE
The Town & Country FCE Club met May 8 in the home of Norma Schrieber.
Margie McAnally and Schreiber were program chairwomen and glycerine soap was made by those present.
Schreiber read a poem, "Special Friends," for the devotion.
Darlene McCain, vice president, presided over the business meeting. She read the minutes of the April meeting and Shirley Heise gave the treasurer's report.
Heise gave a report on the Spring District Meeting held May 2 in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Linda Thompson received second place in the state for the Cape County International report.
The club will hold a party for Parkview School students at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. June 12 at My Daddy's Cheesecake at the Village. Bring paper products and food items for the Food Pantry in Jackson.
Club Out will be at 6:30 p.m. May 28 at Cracker Barrel.
Quest Club
The Quest Club, GFWC, met May 14 in the home of Grace Hoover. Tina Dohogne and Shannon Larock presented the program on the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. They also discussed the newly formed Volunteer Intergenerational Center.
Dorothy Miles gave the "Clubwoman" report on club members and their volunteer work.
Irene Popp conducted a memorial service for longtime member Hilda Maevers.
Carol Robert from the Southeast Missourian spoke on the "Cape Girardeau Faces and Places" book to be published by the newspaper. She is seeking any old pictures.
The next meeting will be a luncheon meeting at Chateau Girardeau at noon on June 11. The program will be presented by Bryan Keller, "Happiness is Music in the Air."
Alpha Mu Master
Joyce Hays, vice president, gave a program on adoptions when the Alpha Mu Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met in her home on May 12.
The Ritual of Jewels Degree was conducted for Bernie Gardner by Hays. Carole Calvin, president, conducted the Ritual for the Order of the Rose and the Silver Circle Ritual for member Gwen Nussbaum.
Vicki McKinney read a note from Hays thanking the chapter for selecting her as the chapter's Woman of the Year.
The social committee, Bobbie Woodard and Charlotte Bess, announced the lunch out dates for the summer. It will be held on the second Wednesday of each month beginning at 11:30 a.m. June 11 at Grace Cafe; on July 9, at My Daddy's Cheesecake at The Village; and on Aug. 13, at O'Charlies in Cape Girardeau.
Mary Schwab and McKinney, service project committee, announced that a donation of $25 each will be sent to the Cape Girardeau Salvation Army for the tornado victims and to the Beta Sigma Phi State Service Project for Matthew Pearl.
A gift of appreciation was presented to the outgoing officers by Calvin. On behalf of the chapter, Hays presented Calvin with a gavel for her pin and a gift card.
Installation of officers was conducted: Marsha Parrish, president; Judie Herbst, vice president; Schwab, recording secretary; Gardner, treasurer; and Schwab, corresponding secretary.
Alpha Rho
Alpha Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met May 15, at the home of Loretta Atkins.
Erma Vaughan read the ritual of installation to Ritual of Jewels Degree to Mary Ann Nenninger. Bonnie Hennessy read the 50-year Golden Circle award to Edna Hey, LaVerna Baker, LaRuse Brown, Pat Taylor, Dorothy Miles and Marion Edwards.
Hey and Hennessy reported on the City Council meeting where new officers were elected and plans for Beginning Day were presented. Hennessy, retiring president, thanked the chapter for her pin.
Hennessy installed the following new officers: Vaughan, president; Rosanna Whitnel, vice president, Nenninger, recording secretary; Brown, corresponding secretary; Norme Schrieber, treasurer; Doretta Atkins, Hennessy and Hey, city council representatives.
The next meeting will be the birthday luncheon. Date and place will be announced later.
American Legion Auxiliary 63
The American Legion Auxiliary met on May 14 for a luncheon to honor women veterans, Lillian Burgfeld, Marilyn Ritter and Elenora Brewton. Also honored was Gold Star Mother, Jean Hogan, and Gold Star Member, Marie McElreath. Women from the Jackson American Legion Auxiliary also attended.
A slate of officers for 2003-2004 was accepted with election to be held at the June meeting.
Six girls will be leaving on June 21, for Missouri Girl's State. They are Sarah Michel, Megan Kistner, Sommer McCaulley, Rachel Ruopp, Megan Friese and Rachel Morse.
A motion was made to send $100 to the 14th District President for the nurse's scholarship.
The unit will purchase $50 worth of raffle tickets to benefit the Kenny Rogers Center in Sikeston, Mo.
Treasurer Myrna Powers was given permission to give Post 63 a donation for the Legion building fund.
May 28 will be the annual trip. The car pool will leave Bingo World parking lot by 9 a.m. The group will go to Fort Kaskaskia and Fort de Chartres and have lunch at Reid's Cafe in Chester, Ill.
The 50/50 raffle was won by Lawana Wulfers. Thirty-five pounds of tab tops will be turned in for the Ronald McDonald Housing program.
A thank-you note was received from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and from SEMO Network Against Sexual Violence.
The next meeting will be held at Cherry Hill in Capaha Park at noon on June 11. Members are asked to bring a covered dish, their table service and drinks.
