American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary met May 8 with 20 members in attendance. Hostesses for the noon lunch were Alice Cordea, Linda Kern, Tina Bill and Donna Hinze.

Patsy Kimbrel won the 50/50 and Barbara Yallaly and Bill won the attendance prizes.

A thank-you note from Jefferson Elementary School was read in appreciation of supplies and clothes donated to the students, and a note of thanks for the $250 for a brick paver to be placed in Melaina's Magical Playground was read.

The June 12 meeting will be the picnic to be held starting at noon at the Lutheran Shelter in Arena Park. Chicken will be provided and members are to bring a covered dish and their own table service. Women veterans from Missouri Veterans Home will be special guests. The six students attending Girls State, June 23 to 29 will be invited to be guests, as well as their parents.

Members also voted to make a cash contribution to Dennis Woeltje to help defray expeneses as he is pursuing the position of Department Commander, Department of Missouri.

Officers elected to serve the 2013/2014 year are: Yallaly, president; Jerri Stone, vice president; Myrna Powers, treasurer; Dorothy Klein, secretary; Mildred Varvell, sergeant at arms; and Shirley Young, historian.

An announcement was made of the 4th of July picnic to be held in the American Legion Hall.

Details will be provided at the June meeting.

Town and Country FCE

The Town and Country FCE Club met May 9 in the home of Linda Thompson. The devotion, "Be of Good Cheer" by Helen Steiner Rice, was given by Thompson. Roll call was answered to, "A favorite thing about May." Mary Klaproth led a Mother's quiz with Sue Jones the winner. Karen Murphy and Donna Woolsey joined the club and were welcomed as new members. Pennies for Coins for Friendship were collected.

Jones, president, presided over the business meeting. A thank-you note was read from Parkview State School for the St. Patrick's Day Party that was given. Bingo prizes were delivered to the Lutheran Home on April 30 and Books for Newborns were delivered by Lois Seabaugh at Southeast Hospital.

The club finalized plans to give a party for the students at Parkview State School at the conclusion of their play day on May 10. Members were given assignments for the items to bring for the party.

Members gave approval to give a donation of $25 for Clover Kid 4-H Camp to be held in June. Members gave approval to purchase two fans to give to the Salvation Army with Darlene McCain to purchase the fans and a delivery date to be announced later.

The quarterly Cape Girardeau County FCE Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 6 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.

The next work day for making weighted blankets for TouchPoint Autism Center will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 10. Members can come for all or part of the day.

Members were reminded of the FCE sponsored trip to attend The Muny in St. Louis to see the musical, "Nunsense," on July 2. The deadline to register is June 14.

A scholarship in the amount of $200 is to be given by the University Extension Council. The deadline to apply is July 19 and more information is available by calling the Extension Center at 243-3581.

There was discussion regarding the National FCE Conference to be held in Fargo, N.D., July 18 through 21.

The program was the New Health Plan and Thompson shared information regarding it. In addition, all members participated in the discussion of Hearth Fire #23 Person to Person...More Than Skin Deep.

Jones received the hostess gift. Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Tractors in Jackson.

The next meeting will be the club's anniversary party to be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 13 at the Grecian Steak House in Cape Girardeau.

Kage FCE Club

The Kage FCE Club met May 9 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center with Marian Kramer acting as hostess to the group. Roll call was answered to favorite mini vacations.

The club recently donated items and cash to the Cape Girardeau County Health Department and FISH, and thank-you notes from those agencies were received and read. Members reported that they continue to participate in the Crystal Club cleaning glasses for residents at the Lutheran Home.

Club members are urged to participate in another Sewing for Autism work day on June 10 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.

President Dortha Strack reported that books were purchased for the nursery at Saint Francis Medical Center to commemorate National Day of the Family, which was Wednesday.

Plans are being made to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Kage Club early in 2014. Shirley Palen shared an initial copy of the member's favorite recipes cookbook now in production to celebrate this occasion.

Inez Statler presented an interesting program on mini vacations with a focus on interesting places to visit in the state of Missouri.

Barbara Marshall will host the next meeting. Members of the local Young Americans 4-H Club will visit and share their demonstration skills.
