Capaha Scottish Rite Women

The May meeting of the Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club was held at Frontier Restaurant at Fruitland with nine members and four guests in attendance. Luella Armstrong presided.

A get-well card was signed for Lillian Birkman.

Mary Mouser, program chairman, gave a program on May Day.

The next meeting will be held on June 12 at Frontier Restaurant with Omega Hawkins, Juanita Holder and Donna Delay serving as hostesses. New officers will be installed at this meeting.

Tilsit 4-H

The Tilsit 4-H Club met on May 4 at Gordonville Fire Station 2 near Tilsit. Matthew Golden, president, presided over the meeting. There were 15 members and 11 others present. Songs were led by Clay Birk, Ryan Aufdenberg and Todd Aufdenberg. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given.

The club received a $500 grant from the Missouri 4-H Foundation. It is to be used for the club's community service project, which is the construction of weighted blankets, vests and lap pads for autistic children. The club will host a countywide work day to work on this community service project on July 15 and 29 at the University of Missouri Extension office in Jackson.

A 4-H junior leader reported on the upcoming 4-H camp that will be held July 10 through 12 at Lake Wappapello.

Clay Birk gave a talk on how to shoe a horse, Adam Birk gave a talk on how to freeze-brand cattle, and David Gholson gave a talk on swine showmanship.

Project meetings were reported by cake decorating, photography, sewing and foods A groups.

The next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 1 at the fire station.

New Salem UMW

The United Methodist Women of New Salem Church in Daisy hosted their mother/daughter banquet on May 3 in the church fellowship hall. The theme was "The Big Top Circus." Those participating in the circus were Shirley Grebe, ringleader; Goldie Hobeck, vendor-baby cakes; Betty Henry, big yellow talking parrot; Verla Mangels and Barbara Brown, monkeys; Colleen Lukefahr and Roberta Seabaugh, dog trainer and her dog; Betty Hahs and Dorothy Hahs, clowns; and Margie Roberts and Jackie Kurre, elephant trainer and two-trunked elephant. A meal of circus food was served.

The next meeting will be the birthday party celebration at 6:30 p.m. June 7 in the church fellowship hall.

Arnsberg 4-H

The Arnsberg 4-H Club met May 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedheim with 16 members and 12 leaders in attendance. Tyler Lappe, president, presided over the meeting.

The following demonstrations were given. Ethan Seyer, how to halter break a calf; Ryan Pohlman, arc welding; Dustin Oehl, how to make a greeting card on a computer; Jessica Seyer, the difference between poison ivy and Virginia creeper; Tyler Lappe, how to make a no-bake cheesecake; Kaycie Seyer, venomous and nonvenomous snakes; Kyle Rohde, how to bench show a dog; Rachel Seyer, poisonous and nonpoisonous spiders in Missouri; Amanda Lappe, how to make decorative hearts; Chelsea Seyer, items needed to show a steer at the fair; Hunter Seyer, caring for a bucket calf; Cody Hahs, how to plant a tomato plant; Kelly Hahs, how to make a flower cupcake; Ryan Below, photography; Dakota Oehl, making a salt box; and Michaela Oehl, identifying parts of a cat.

It was decided the club will have a picnic and swimming party for their summer activity.

The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. June 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedheim.

Alpha Mu Master

The Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Bobbie Woodard. Margaret Little, president, conducted the meeting. Martha Slaten is a new member of the chapter.

Members brought items for Project Hope, the chapter's monthly service project.

Mary Schwab gave the results of the chapter survey that members filled out at the last meeting. The survey is used to determine what changes should be made for the new year. Members also voted for the program of the year.

A discussion was held to consider service projects. It was decided to send $50 donations to Birthright, Hope Lodge and the Beta Sigma Phi State Service Project.

Past member Karen Menard was presented a chapter charm by Marsha Parrish. Karen and her husband, Don, now reside in The Villages, Fla.

Judie Herbst presented Little a gift from the chapter as out-going president.

Members were asked to sign up for various committees for the new year and to sign up for their preference to host meetings for next year.

Plans were made for the chapter's end of the year dinner to be held at the Royal N'Orleans at 6 p.m. Monday. This will be the final meeting of the year and regular meetings will resume in September.

Installation of officers was held. They are Vicki McKinney, president; Carole Calvin, vice president; Herbst, recording secretary; Schwab, corresponding secretary; and Linda Metheney, treasurer.

Woodard presented the program, introducing members of Sigma Alpha Iota Music fraternity at Southeast Missouri State University. They sang a variety of songs and played the piano.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its installation and awards banquet on May 2 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. Cheryl Hill, retiring president, congratulated the club for having 700 service hours.

Upcoming service projects were discussed. They include Missouri Mentoring Mother's Day party, the Habitat for Humanity workday, the Vision House Literacy Project, the Cape Girardeau Library Book Sale and the Summer Slumber Series with the Girl Scouts.

Special awards were presented for 2005 to 2006. They were Mona Copeland, perfect attendance and most service hours; Jan Ruopp, perfect attendance; Heather Brooks, the "go-getter" award; Mary Scherer, most service projects; Mary Greaser and Naomi Newman, 30 years of continuous service; Lizbe Knote, 25 years of continuous service; Kathy Swan and Anna Wagganer, 15 years of continuous service; Maria Childress, Leslie Herbst and Reagan Holliday, five years of continuous service.

New officers for 2006 to 2007 are Childress, president; Polly Holton, president-elect; Erin Dial, vice president; Linda Garner, secretary; Jennifer Hendrickson, treasurer; Debra Holzhauer, fundraising; Kim Schlitt, service; Hill, honorary board members; Kara Clark, finance; and Brooks, membership.

Kage FCE

Kage FCE Club met May 11 at the home of Dortha Strack.

Martha Slaten reported on the April 27 Southeast District FCE meeting held in Jackson. There were 88 members in attendance, and $234.50 was received from the silent auction.

Inez Statler and Strack attended the recent United Way recognition luncheon and received a certificate. They also presented $175 to the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation. The club received a grant from Missouri Foundation for Family and Community Education. The money will go for the purchase of medical identification jewely for children with diabetes and for booklets on diabetes from the National Association for Family and Community Education. Some day camp supplies will be purchased, and Kage members will help at camp.

Club members were invited to the volunteer appreciation luncheon at the Lutheran Home held on May 15. Members who clean eyeglasses at the home signed up for May 15 through June 8.

Strack announced she had received a scholarship application available through the University Extension Council and urged members to publicize this.

Shirley Rhaban reported the Monticello House in Jackson would be happy to receive books that club members wish to donate.

Opal Collins delivered books for newborns to Saint Francis Medical Center in recognition of National FCE Day of the Family.

Strack gave the program on gardening for birds.

The next meeting will be held on June 8 with Verna Vogel as hostess.

Town & Country FCE

The Town & Country FCE met with Carolyn Thompson as hostess with 11 members present. Lois Seabaugh, president, presided over the meeting.

A thank-you card for Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center was signed by members, thanking them for nominating the club as the United Way Volunteer Group of the year for its volunteer work and the luncheon held on April 20. The club voted to send a monetary donation with the card.

Sue Jones will submit a grant application for the 2006 Missouri Foundation for Family and Community Education to be used toward playground equipment at Parkview State School.

A report was given on the Southeast District FCE meeting held April 27.

Members were reminded of the county council meeting to be held at 7 p.m. June 1 at the Extension Center in Jackson.

Food pantry items are to be brought to the June 8 meeting.

Mary Klaproth, president, gave each member a papyrus bookmark and a dairy milk fruit/nut bar from Cairo, Egypt, where she just returned from vacation.

The programs were given by Linda Thompson on domestic violence and Seabaugh on the food pyramid.

Plans are being made for the club's 40th-year anniversary to be celebrated at the next meeting on June 8. Club-out will be at 6:30 p.m. May 25 at Red Lobster.
