The Southeast District Spring FCE Meeting was held April 29 at the First United Methodist Church in Doniphan, Missouri. The meeting was hosted by Ripley County. The theme of the meeting was Stargazing. Shirley Kirkley, Southeast District Director from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, presided. Mary Klaproth from Cape Girardeau County, gave the Thought of the Day titled The Ten Commandments to a Long and Peaceful Life. Edna Crain, Butler County, led the roll call which was answered by 39 members. Fourteen members attended from Cape Girardeau County.
Dana Harris, MAFCE president from Fulton, Missouri, presented the program on stargazing. Klaproth, MAFCE vice president, gave information regarding the National FCE Conference which will be held in St. Louis at the Hotel Marriott July 18 through 21. Klaproth had applications available for scholarships for first-time attendees. The registration forms were also available to complete for the National FCE Conference. Klaproth had information regarding the MAFCE Conference to be held Aug. 27 and 28 at the Capitol Plaza in Jefferson City, Missouri. She had applications available for scholarships for first-time attendees. The registration forms for the MAFCE Conference were also available. The MAFCE Conference programs will include, grandprents raising grandchildren, parent up, hats and the international program. The banquet speaker will be Carol Reimann, a previous Missouri state teacher of the year. Reimann taught first grade for many years. Early bird workshops will be held on origami, color to relax and what you should know.
Dana Harris, MAFCE President, presented years of membership certificates to Barbara Popp, 60 years; JoAnn Hahs, 55 years; Joan Meyer, 50 years; Jane Lungwitz and Agnes Wachter, 45 years; Inez Statler, 35 years; Bea Bulbulka and June Peetz, 25 years; and Barbara Marshall, 15 years.
Shirley Kirkley gave a financial report for the Southeast District which includes four counties -- Butler, Cape Girardeau, Perry and Ripley Counties. All members received copies of the report.
Emma Andrews, first place winner in the essay and artwork contest, read her essay on trustworthiness. Andrews and her parents enjoyed lunch with the group.
The afternoon program was presented by a local plant nursery store. She gave some hints how to keep plants healthy.
Barbara Barks and Verla Mangels distributed the door prizes which were donated by Cape Girardeau, Butler and Ripley Counties. They were given to lucky winners.
The Southeast District Fall Meeting will be held in Cape Girardeau County at the University of Missouri Extension Center with the date to be announced later.
