Zonta Club
The Zonta Club of Cape Girar-deau area met May 4 at the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University. Anne Anderson, director of Zonta Area 6, attended the meeting and installed the following members as the 2004-2005 officers and directors: Marcia Southard-Ritter, president; Cheryl Hill, president-elect; Terri Foley, vice president; Dianne Gammon, secretary; Marsha Haskell, treasurer; Kimberly Price, fund-raising director; Reagan Holliday and Sherry Persinger, service directors; Ann Wagganer, finance director; Polly Holten, membership director; and Mona Copeland, honorary director as immediate past president.
The club presented its 2003-2004 service awards: Maria Childress, most service hours; Hill, most service projects; and Holliday, the "Go Getter" award.
The club also recognized members' service hours with Zonta on community projects. Ten members performed 15 to 30 service hours. They are Alicia Hansen, Cheryl Mothes, Ellen Dillon, Dorothy Matthews, Sandy Hastings, Dr. Jayne Scherrman, Karen Stephens, Gammon, Persinger and Southard-Ritter. Nine members performed 30 to 60 service hours. They are Mary Greaser, Kimberly Price, Kathy Swan, Jeannie Van de Ven, Jean Schlicter, Copeland, Haskell, Scherer and Holten. Five members performed 60 plus service hours. They are Dale Hum-phries, Dr. Janet Ruopp (100 hours), Childress (101 hours), Holliday and Hill (101 hours). The club participated in 18 service projects in the community in the last year.
The club discussed upcoming projects including participation in the Friends of the Library Foundation Spring Book Sale to be held Tuesday through May 20 and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on June 4 and 5. The club also discussed plans for the Women of Achievement luncheon scheduled for Sept. 30. The luncheon will honor two women in the region for their professional and community service. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason will be guest speaker and will receive the Celebration Award.
Hobbs Chapel UMW
The Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Women met at the home of Chris Simmons on May 3. The group celebrated the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo. A Mexican meal was prepared and served by the hostess. She presented a program on Mexican history, heritage and the dishes that were served.
May 30 is United Methodist Women's Day and the service will be conducted by the Hobbs Chapel UMW.
June 26 has been set aside for the UMW Mystery Trip. Those interested in attending should sign up and meet at the church at 10 a.m. that day for departure.
The UMW will purchase a water buffalo for the Heifer program. The donation will be presented at the annual conference in June.
Hobbs Chapel UMW will host the Cape-area UMW meeting on Oct. 5.
Xi Nu Phi
The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met May 4 in the home of Renee Hesselrode. It was announced that Cathy Pancoast received the "Girl of the Year" Award for our chapter.
Installation of officers for 2004-2005 was held. Sharon Hinkebein was welcomed as a new member. Sheryl Smith advanced to the Preceptor level.
The 2005 State Convention logo designed by Sandy Ross has been selected. The 2003-2004 Chapter Yardstick will be completed and submitted. The Beginning Day Committee has been meeting to organize this event.
Plans were finalized for members who will be attending the Nashville Flea Market on May 22.
The next meeting will be Tuesday at the home of Tammy Monia at which time secret pal names will be revealed. Members are reminded to bring finger food and a swap gift.
AARP No. 4041
The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP No. 4041 met May 3 at Grace United Methodist Church.
Carl Kinnison from the Cape Girardeau Police Department and Rick Ennis from the Cape Girar-deau Fire Department spoke about the tax for the fire and police departments that will be on the ballot on June 8.
Opal Collins presented the program "Our Heritage -- Past, Present and Future." A charter was given in September 1987. Seven charter members were recognized out of 162 members. She also told about different activities throughout the years. Collins was recognized as volunteer of the year.
Laureate Alpha Rho
The Laureate Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met May 6 at the home of Mary Ann Nenninger in Gordonville. A business meeting was held, followed by the installation of the returning slate of officers: Erma Vaughan, president; Rosanna Whitnel, vice president; Nenninger, recording secretary; LaRue Brown, corresponding secretary; and Norma Schrieber, treasurer.
A suggestion was made that members bring old mattress pads and blankets to the first meeting in September and a couple of "ugly" quilts will be made as a project to be given to one of the churches who sends these quilts to the homeless in large cities.
Margaret Crites' birthday on May 24 was recognized. The proposed logos for the 2005 convention were passed around for all to view. It was reported that Brown has recently moved into Cape Town Assisted Living and will be selling her home. Bonnie Hennessy will be in charge of making arrangements for the birthday social to be held in July.
The next meeting will be a social gathering. Members will travel by car pool to Ste. Genevieve, Mo., where they will have lunch at the Ste. Genevieve Hotel followed by an afternoon of shopping.
A group program was presented by the hostess. It was based on next year's theme, "Give the Gift of Friendship." White elephant gifts and one "keeper" gift were won and stolen from members in a game of roll the dice. Whitnel was the winner of the "keeper" gift.
On April 27, 11 members attended the Founder's Day banquet held at Centenary United Methodist Church Family Life Center. Girls of the year were announced and Nenninger was chosen as Laurate Alpha Rho chapter's "Girl of the Year."
