Council of Garden Clubs

The third-quarter meeting of the Council of Garden Clubs was held March 13 in the Family Life Center of Centenary United Methodist Church. Barbara Blanchard, president, called the meeting to order. The minutes and treasurer's report were read and accepted.

Ann Foust reported that the Council of Garden clubs now has a board of directors: Judy Holshouser, president; Bud Davie, Ann Crites, Foust, Iris Ford, Marlene Osborn, Jerry Houchins and Blanchard.

The board discussed ways to fund the upkeep of the garden.

A nominating committee will be appointed from each of the clubs. Installation will be held at the next meeting on June 12.

The state convention will be May 6 and 7.

Missouri Retired Teachers Association

The Missouri Retired Teachers Association met April 2 at Chateau Girardeau.

A business meeting was conducted. Doris Ford was nominated as retired educator of the year from the Cape Girardeau unit. Al Mason will be the club's delegate at the assembly meeting in Columbia, Mo. Gene Loftis is the alternate. The assembly meeting takes place Sept. 2.

The next meeting is at 9:30 a.m. May 7.

Xi Nu Phi

Xi Nu Phi met April 1 at the home of Carla Harold.

The club plans to attend the Wine Tasting Event benefit for the Community Counseling Center. It will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Deerfield Lodge.

Founder's Day was discussed. It will be held April 24.

The next meeting will be Tuesday at the home of Renee Hesselrode.

New Salem UMW

The New Salem United Methodist UMW held its regular meeting at the home of Dorothy Hahs.

Twenty-one sick calls were made. The UMW will prepare the dinner meal for the CTA on April 22. The young adult class will take care of the Christmas decorations in the park.

A motion was made to give the first-quarter pledge money to a local family to help out with hospital expenses.

The mother-daughter banquet will be held May 7 at the Fellowship Hall.

It was decided to buy some new silverware and serving dishes for the kitchen.

The program, given by Susan Sterner, was titled "Women followers of Jesus."

Alpha Rho

Alpha Rho of Beta Sigma Phi met at My Daddy's Cheesecake on April 3 for its annual Easter brunch meeting. Rosanna Whitnel was hostess. Party favors of a decorated cup filled with Easter goodies surrounded by artificial grass made by Whitnel were placed by each plate. She was also presented with a yellow rose for being voted "Girl of the Year."

Cards were signed to be sent to members who are ill. A reminder was given about the Founders Day Banquet which will be held April 24 at Centenary United Methodist Church. Deadline for reservations is April 15.

Whitnel gave the two-part program on Easter: "History of the Easter Bunny" and "Why We Give Easter Eggs."

The next meeting will be held May 1 at the home of Margaret Crites.
